Centenary Stage To Hold Non-Union Open Call Auditions For 2019 Summer Musical Season

(HACKETTSTOWN, NJ) -- The Centenary Stage Company, a professional not for profit theater located on the Campus of Centenary University, will be holding, non-equity open auditions for the 2019 Summer Musical Season featuring Nunsense and Jesus Christ Superstar. Auditions will be held on Saturday, March 30 from 12:00pm to 8:00pm in the Lackland Performing Arts Center located on the campus of Centenary University at 715 Grand Ave. Hackettstown, NJ. No appointment is necessary. Interested performers will be seen on a first come first served basis. All roles are open.

CSC is seeking a diverse company, non - traditional casting will be considered and ethnic performers are strongly encouraged to attend. Stipend and housing provided. CSC is seeking dynamic actors, singers and movers – specifically singers with strong pop/rock abilities for Jesus Chris Superstar and singers with strong comedic timing for Nunsense. Performers should prepare 16 – 32 bars of a contemporary song from the musical theatre genre. An accompanist will be provided. There will be a movement portion of the audition. Be prepared to move.

The summer season will launch with Nunsense. Performances are scheduled for July 11 through July 21 with individual performances running Thursday through Sunday in the Sitnik Theatre of the Lackland Performing Arts Center. With music and lyrics by Dan Goggin, The Order of the Little Sisters of Hoboken take over a high school auditorium to hold a fundraising variety show in order to raise money to bury several sisters (who were accidentally poisoned by their cook). They must raise the funds before the health inspector comes and finds the dead nuns in their freezer. Fraught with hilarity, both Catholic and otherwise, five nuns try to perform their planned performance amidst chaos and calamity.

The summer season closes with Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar. Performances are scheduled for August 1 through August 11 with individual performances running Thursday through Sunday in the Sitnik Theatre of the Lackland Performing Arts Center. Jesus Christ Superstar recounts the last days of Jesus Christ from the perspective of his betrayer, Judas Iscariot. As Jesus’ following increases, Judas begins to worry that Jesus is falling for his own hype, forgetting the principles of his teachings.

Auditions will be held on Saturday, March 30 from 12pm – 8pm in the Lackland Performing Arts Center located on the campus of Centenary University at 715 Grand Ave. Hackettstown, NJ. No appointment is necessary. Interested performers will be seen on a first come first served basis. All roles are open. CSC is seeking a diverse company, non - traditional casting will be considered and ethnic performers are strongly encouraged to attend.

SEEKING:

Nunsense

Sister Mary Regina (Mother Superior)Mezzo/belterThe head of the convent, she is respected greatly by the sisters. Part requires some very physical humor.

Sister Mary Hubert: Mezzo/belter. Hubert is in charge of novices, but fancies herself a Mother Superior and is constant competition with Mary Regina. She exudes maternal wisdom to novices, but also likes to let loose.

Sister Robert Anne: Mezzo/belter. Once a child delinquent herself, this rough tough nun is a jokester and constantly challenging authority.

Sister Mary AmnesiaSoprano AND belter. As the name suggests, she has lost her memory and does not know who she is except that she is a nun. She is spacey and incoherent, often slipping into displays inappropriate for a nun.

Sister Mary Leo: Mezzo/belter. Leo is the novice nun, still learning the way and coming to terms with her decision to give up "civilian" life. She is a ballerina and displays her talents through much of the show. She is also easily swayed to join in mischief. Point work a plus.

Jesus Christ Superstar

Jesus Christ: Tenor. Protagonist of the story, leader of the twelve Apostles, and son of God, Messiah and King of the Jews.

Judas Iscariot: Tenor. One of the twelve apostles of Jesus; concerned for the poor and for the consequences of Jesus' fame. A tragic figure, a conflicted man, and a powerfully passionate guy

Mary Magdalene: Alto. A female follower of Jesus who finds herself falling in love with him.  This is a woman of great strength.

Pontius Pilate: Baritone. Governor of Judea who foresees the events of Jesus’ crucifixion from beginning to aftermath in a dream and finds himself being presented with that very situation. One of the most complex characters in the play, a man of his time and a leader capable of great brutality, yet also a man of a certain conscience.

Caiaphas: Bass. Joseph Caiaphas was the high priest of Jerusalem who, according to Biblical accounts, sent Jesus to Pilate for his execution.

Annas: Tenor. Fellow priest at the side of Caiaphas who is persuaded by Caiaphas into seeing Jesus as a threat.

Peter: Baritone (G2-G4). One of Jesus' 12 apostles; denies Jesus three times upon the night of Jesus' arrest to save himself

Simon Zealotes: Tenor. One of Jesus' 12 apostles; urges Jesus to lead his followers into battle against the Romans.

King Herod: Baritone. The King of Galilee; Jesus is brought to him for judgment after first being taken to Pilate.
