Makin Waves with The Anderson Council: Keeping Young

If you are a fan of British Invasion power pop and psychedelia and subsequently inspired acts, Highland Park-based The Anderson Council are you’re jam. Released on Jersey-based JEM Records — home to similar Garden State acts The Weeklings and The Grip Weeds — last year’s 14-song “Worlds Collide” is one of the best things the psyche-pop four-piece ever have done during their 21 years, following four previous LPs and an anthology.

Makin Waves Record of the Week: "Lila" by San Tropez

The Highland Park-based dream pop outfit San Tropez will play in support of their passionate five-song debut EP, “Lila,” on March 20 at The Asbury Soundbooth in Asbury Park and April 11 at Pino’s, their hometown haven for original bands.

Light Opera of New Jersey Goes Batty for "Die Fledermaus"

On February 21 and 22, Light Opera of New Jersey presents the delightful operetta “Die Fledermaus” by Johann Strauss II in Basking Ridge. The operetta, which first debuted in 1874, will be performed in English (so you can get the jokes), despite keeping the German-language title. That’s often the case with this operetta, since it’s known best as “Fledermaus,” and it feels really weird to call it “The Bat.” (And by “Bat” I mean the flying mammal, not a baseball bat. And no, this isn’t some vampire comedy either. But you’ll figure that out when I get to the plot-telling below.)

Centenary Stage Company Presents Act III: A Musical Journey Featuring Timothy Smith

(HACKETTSTOWN, NJ) -- Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day early as Centenary Stage Company presents Act III: A Musical Journey featuring Irish Tenor, Timothy Smith on Sunday, March 8 at 2:00pm. The performance will be held in the Sitnik Theatre of the Lackland Performing Arts Center at 715 Grand Ave. Hackettstown, NJ.

The Art Of Sound Presents Frank Bell

(LAMBERTVILLE, NJ) -- Gaining traction as one of Lambertville’s leading underground cultural supporters, The Art of Sound announces their next Unplugged live-performance salon series with the return of International recording artist, musician and songwriter Frank Bell.  On Thursday, March 12 at 7:00pm, Bell will be kicking-off the next Unplugged salon-styled concert on the heels of four successful seasons, coincidentally on the two-year Unplugged, premiere anniversary which featured him.  Other monthly performance dates to be taking place through June will be announced shortly.

The New Brunswick Jazz Project Turns 10

Did you know that New Brunswick, N.J. is the only place in the country where you can see live, world-class jazz every week for free? You can thank the New Brunswick Jazz Project. We recently sat down with the New Brunswick Jazz Project team at Tavern on George, where most of their events take place. Jimmy Lenihan, Virginia DeBerry, and Michael Tublin are long-time friends who share a passion for jazz, and, 10 years ago, they set out on a mission together to bring live jazz back to New Jersey in a big way.

Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...2/20/20

" I'm an entertainer, I love it and when I walk on that stage I become another person. I know my audiences and I know what to do to make them smile and how to make them happy. I always like to fulfill requests if I know ahead of time; I love to do that; who doesn't like to make people happy?"

On March 9th, Arthouse Film Festival will return for ten weeks to its home base New Jersey theatres: AMC Mountainside and AMC Monmouth Mall. If you are not one of the thousands of New Jersey film buffs who have attended in years past, just imagine seeing a festival-winning gem before release to the public, then the lights come up, and there in front of you are the creators of the film, ready to answer questions and discuss their work.
