(MONTCLAIR, NJ) -- The final live tour of the hit TV comedy “Mystery Science Theater 3000” is coming to The Wellmont Theater in Montclair on Saturday, March 7. The last-of-its-kind performance is being called the “Great Cheesy Movie Circus Tour!” Join show creator and original host, Joel Hodgson, and the world’s greatest – and only – movie-riffing robots, Tom Servo, Crow and Gypsy, as they take viewers on an exhilarating roller coaster ride through some of the “cheesiest” films ever made.
“Mystery Science Theater 3000” has earned its place in history, with over 200 episodes, and its revival is currently a hit show on Netflix. Now you can sit in the same theater with your favorite characters and experience this comedy phenomenon in a universally acclaimed live event. Plus, it’s the last chance to see Hodgson, as he celebrates his final live tour. The rapid-fire hilarity is brimming with hundreds of jokes riffed on a “So-Bad-It’s-Good” feature film, which is “Circus of Horrors” (1960, Director: Sidney Hayers). Plus, there are sketches and songs throughout!
“MST3K” finds a janitor trapped by mad scientists, forced to watch B movies as part of a devious plot to conquer the world. With the company of robot companions, he screens the movies, hilariously commenting/“riffing” on each. Overall, “MST3K” continues to hone its craft as one of the original pioneers of “social television.”
The original “MST3K” show premiered in November 1988, later airing on Comedy Central for seven seasons. It was then picked up by the Sci-Fi Channel in the mid-’90s, airing for another three seasons. Backed by crowdfunding support, “MST3K” was revived by Netflix, premiering in April 2017. A six-episode second season followed in 2018. To date, more than 200 episodes have aired.
Since its inception, “MST3K” has built a cult following. Initially, that was due in part to the proliferation of the Internet and home viewing. This was followed by accolades and short lists, starting with a place on Time’s roundup of “100 Best TV Shows of All-Time” (2007). TV Guide also called “MST3K” one of the top cult TV shows. The program has also earned a Peabody Award and has been nominated for two Emmys, among other acknowledgements. The program has also been praised for resurfacing older films, plus its interplay between cinematic history and modern commentary.
Mystery Science Theater comes to The Wellmont Theater on March 7th. Doors are at 6:00pm, showtime is 7:00pm. The Wellmont Theater is located at 5 Seymour St., Montclair, N.J., 07042.
