NYC-AREA PUNK BANDS CAUSE A SCENE WITH NEW COMPILATION

(New York, NY) - Birthplace to punk rock in the United States, New York City has experienced a musical-cultural shift over the past decade, with indie and pop rock bands taking foothold of the city's musical identity. The closing of CBGB, the mural of Joe Strummer in the East Village slowly fading away, and mohawks becoming the hairstyle of choice in SoHo reflect the decline of punk's significance in New York, but newly formed Bright & Barrow Records is looking to snap the city out of its musical haze. Aiming to renew the style that helped establish New York City as the mecca of alternative music, the Cause A Scene, Volume One compilation boasts 22 blaring, NYC/NJ-based punk rock bands, which will be available for digital download on August 31st for only $5 via the label's website (BrightAndBarrow.com).

"When I moved to NYC, I was really looking forward to getting immersed in the legendary punk rock scene," says Bright & Barrow founder Ryan Raichilson. "However, I quickly realized that the city had been taken over by indie rock and finding awesome, kick-ass NYC local punk bands was harder than I had anticipated. I want people to know that the NYC and NJ punk scene exists, to be excited about the incredible music being made within it, and to know that it isn't going anywhere." The lack of three-chord inspired rock is what led Raichilson to seek out New York and New Jersey based punk bands for the label's second release, and a staple in the punk label heritage the compilation. Taking cues from Epitaph's Punk-O-Rama, Fat Wreck Chords' Fat Music For Fat People, and Hopeless' Hopelessly Devoted To You series, Bright & Barrow enlisted bands hailing from the five boroughs, Long Island, and the New Jersey scenes in New Brunswick, Asbury Park, Jersey City and southern Jersey.

Armed with tracks from NYC/NJ up-and-comers Banquets, The Measure (SA), House Boat, The Reveling, Stewart, and The Tattle Tales, Cause A Scene rips through melodic and pop punk the way it was intended. Fans can get a taste of Cause A Scene exclusively at Punknews.org to stream The Scutches' "Down on Your Knees": www.punknews.org/bands/thescutches.

To celebrate the release, Bright & Barrow is hosting an album release party on Friday, September 3rd at Arlene's Grocery (95 Stanton St, New York, NY), with special guests The Tattle Tales, Banquets, and more TBA. Tickets are $10 and the show will start at 7pm, 21+.

Though it may have shifted towards the background in the NYC-area, Raichilson concludes that "the city's punk scene never went away. It is still very much alive and thriving, and that is why Cause A Scene is going to work... because there are a lot of incredible bands out there working hard to make the music they want to make. We should all be supportive of each other and do what we can to cause a scene...because we are the scene."
