(NEW YORK, NY) -- Cherry Entertainment in association with Black Ice Entertainment and Baruch Performing Arts Center presents the world premiere of MOVEMENTS OF THE SOUL by Carol Schneider in a limited two week engagement at Baruch Performing Arts Center September 2nd - September 20th. Performed in American Sign Language, English, Signed English and French by a multilingual, versatile ensemble, MOVEMENTS OF THE SOUL brings the story of American Sign Language to life through dynamic storytelling.
Directed by Joe Cacaci, MOVEMENTS OF THE SOUL is based on a true story of the unlikely friendship between a young, hearing, Congregationalist minister and a revolutionary Deaf French teacher in 1818, as they create the first school for the Deaf in America, triumphing over narrow tradition and prejudice, only to see it all pushed to the brink of collapse when one of them follows his heart in his personal life.
The audience experiences the ferocious arc of the play through the spoken word and the picturesque, expressive signing, seamlessly interwoven by this talented ensemble.
“I would climb to the top of the hill and there, amongst a sea of living statues, I would see that flurry of arms and hands…waving out chronicles of world events.
‘I am home,’ I would say to myself.” -- Movements of the Soul Act I
