Leonia Chamber Musicians Society to Present Russian Romantics on Feb 8

originally published: 01/29/2015
(LEONIA, NJ) -- Get in the mood for Valentine's Day at the Leonia Chamber Musicians Society, Inc.'s concert featuring Russian composers of the romantic period. The second performance of a three concert series will be held on February 8 at All Saints Episcopal Church, located at 150 Park Avenue in Leonia, New Jersey, at 4:00 p.m.

Leading New York professional musicians, currently performing at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, as well as living in Leonia and neighboring communities will perform in the concert. The Leonia Chamber Musicians members playing are Patricia Dougherty, bass; Daryl Goldberg, cello; Theresa Norris, flute; and William J. Scribner, bassoon. They will be joined by guest artists Diana Petrella, clarinet; Lauren Hosford, French horn; Francisca Mendoza and Laura-Lindsay Sewell, violins; Maggie Speier, viola; and Steven Masi, piano.

The concert will open with the famous Nocturne from Alexander Borodin's String Quartet No. 2 used in the 1953 musical Kismet for the song "This is my Beloved". Pianist Steven Masi will be featured in two chamber music pieces, Quintet in B-flat major by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakoff for Piano and Winds, and the rarely heard Sergei Lyapunov Sextet for Piano and Strings. All three composers were proponents of the Russian nationalist style in the late 19th century, incorporating a repository of Russian folk song into beautiful and emotionally intense melodies.

The concert is open to the public. Tickets at the door are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors over 65, and students under 18 are admitted free. Refreshments will be served after the concert, and the audience will have an opportunity to meet and greet the musicians. All Saints Episcopal Church is fully handicapped accessible.

The remaining concert of the season will be held on Sunday, April 19, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. Back by popular demand, the final concert will feature a family friendly concert, including a presentation of Babar the Elephant at American Legion Hall, 399 Broad Avenue, in Leonia, New Jersey.
