Midnight Oil is a rock band from Australia that formed in the 1970s. They broke through in America in the 1980s with "Diesel and Dust". The songs "Beds are Burning" and "The Dead Heart" received massive airplay on MTV and rock radio stations.
Their songs often included a political angle to them. This album, in particular, spotlighted the plight of Indigenous Australians. Midnight Oil's lead singer, Peter Garrett, actually entered politics and was elected to the House of Representatives as a member of the Labor Party.
The Makin Waves Song of the Week is "Shine" by Princeton singer-songwriter Helen O'Shea. The song from Helen's latest album, "“Songs in the Key O," features E Street Band backing vocalist Michelle Moore.
