Janey Todd is a singer-songwriter from New Jersey who released one album that I know of. When you hear this wildly creative album you'll wish there were more, but sadly she sort of disappeared from the music scene.
After years of seeing Janey perform solo, this album was a revalation for me to see what her music could sound like with a band behind her. Subtle instrumentation and backing vocals turns a song like "The Man Downstairs" into something mystical. As if she wanted to show the difference, she included the song's stripped down demo as well.
And you'll rarely see such a fun, upbeat song about prison as "Alcatraz". Nicole Atkins joins her on "Serpentine" - just one of many highlights on this record.
Lazlo, founder of BlowUpRadio.com (an online radio station based around New Jersey artists), shines a light on some of the many new releases from NJ based musicians each week with this column. This week Lazlo takes a look at new releases by Ali Zanders, Sam Tunkel, Brian Westervelt, Jay Ingstrup, A Halo Called Fred, Damfino, Regency Club, and Night Windows. Plus a look back at "This American Life" by Diego Allessandro.
