Breakups are a universal experience, and Jersey Shore alt-rock, poptimistic trio The Break Plans’ latest single/video, "(Not) What I Want," captures the essence of post-breakup resilience.

The Makin Waves Song of the Week offers a refreshing perspective on navigating life's beautiful mistakes.

As the Makin Waves Song of the Week, “(Not) What I Want” also can be heard between 6 and 8 p.m. on Sept. 6, on “Radio Jersey” at ThePenguinRocks.com. If you miss it, you can tune in any time in the archives at The Penguin and Mixcloud.

“Heartbreak is really hard and can be incredibly lonely,” golden-throated frontman Colton Braun said. “I wanted to talk about those experiences so many of us have had. What I’ve learned is that there’s a great deal of freedom that comes from finally letting go. Writing these songs with my band was the most cathartic thing I’ve ever done. I hope our listeners can relate and find comfort in it.”

Also guitarist Mikey Strawz and drummer Dan Carr, The Break Plans soon will release “Is This Love,” their fourth single from their November-bound six-song EP, “Mistakes are a Friend of Mine.”

But first they’re vying against four other bands to open for Judah & the Lion Oct. 19 at The Fillmore in Philadelphia in contest that ends Sept. 6. If you haven’t yet, vote for them here.

“Mistakes are a Friend of Mine” drops Nov. 9 with a record release party at the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park. Tour dates will be announced soon.
