Makin Waves Song of the Week: "Keep Movin'" by The Vice Rags

By Bob Makin

originally published: 01/20/2023

“Keep Movin’,” the first single off Asbury Park-based Mint 400 recording act The Vice Rags’ new EP, “Midnight Ride,” is the Makin Waves Song of the Week.

It’s great to see the invaluable North Jersey indie Mint 400 Records working with more and more Asbury Park bands. Yawn Mower, Lowlight, The Extensions, and Renee Maskin are among them, but one of the first was The Vice Rags, a good-rockin’ mash-up between the early rock ‘n’ roll of Elvis Presley and Little Richard with the alternative sounds the four members played in previous bands, such as Mars Needs Women, Kid With Man Head, Dibs, Acid, The Blakes, and Readymade Breakup.

“Keep Movin’,” the first single off the Rags’ new EP, “Midnight Ride,” is the Makin Waves Song of the Week.

As the Makin Waves Song of the Week, “Keep Movin” also can be heard between 6 and 8 p.m. on Jan. 20 on “Radio Jersey” at ThePenguinRocks.com. If you miss it, you can tune in any time in the archives at The Penguin or MixCloud.

For the most part, the well-received and reviewed “Midnight Ride” was produced and engineered by legendary indie producer Steve Evetts (Poison the Well, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Sepultura, Saves the Day, Lifetime). The five-song EP is a follow-up to the band’s 2018 debut album, “Hope the Neighbors Are Lookin’.”

Since the November release of “Midnight Run,” Mint 400 dropped a second single for the cool-rockin’ “Voodoo Hoodoo.”

The members of the local supergroup are:

* Lead vocalist-guitarist Paul Rosevear (The Blakes, Readymade Breakup)

* Bassist Gay Elvis (Kid with Manhead, Readymade Breakup, The Blakes)

* Drummer Joe Chyb (Dibs, Acid)

* Guitarist Jack Roberts (Mercy Circle, Mars Needs Women).
