Dire Straits was a band from London led by Mark Knopfler. They were already a popular band when this album came out, but this record took their popularity to another level - one that would ultimately lead to the band's breakup.
This was the record you had to get on CD. Its sound was simply brilliant with the new technology. From what I remember, it may have done more to get people to buy CD players as any other record. Decades later, it still sounds fantastic.
My favorite tracks are "So Far Away", "Money for Nothing", "Ride Across the River" and the title track. The video for "Money for Nothing" was one of the most memorable of the 1980s.
Dire Straits was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
The Makin Waves Song of the Week is "Blessing," the first single from Jersey Shore songstress Brielle Brown's forthcoming full-length debut album, "In Art & Soil the Same."
