(JERSEY CITY, NJ) -- Novado Gallery presents Graphic Conversations, An Improvisation Between Sight & Sound on Saturday, October 3, 2026 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Graphic Conversations pairs artist Heidi Curko with sound practitioner Nav Kaur in a live, improvised performance where listening and mark-making merge.
During the performance, Nav Kaur will build an immersive sound field with crystal singing bowls, filling the space with tones, resonance, and vibration. Artist Heidi Curko will then respond with spontaneous drawing and painting, turning feeling into gesture, line, movement, and form.
Sound and mark-making influence each other: sound can become a line, a pause can create empty space, a sustained tone can lead to a sweeping gesture, and a sudden shift can change the composition's direction. The drawings record experience rather than sight.
For Curko, mark-making is a fundamental expressive language. Her practice is rooted in the belief that artistic media can become a metaphor for life. Kaur explores sound, presence, and consciousness through contemplative, sound-based practice.
Together, the two artists create a conversation without words: sound generates movement, movement leaves a trace, and the trace becomes an image. The resulting work is not simply a painting made during a performance, but the visible residue of an encounter between two artistic disciplines; a moment in which sound is seen and gesture is heard.
