Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites... 08/27/2026

"John and I started the band," said Scuffletown guitarist and founding member Marc Carraway, "We've been playing together for 28 years primarily as a duo but we also bring other folks in and Matty is our go to third man for many of our tours and big shows. So, we started 28 years ago as an acoustic duo with guitar, vocal, harmonica, accordion and flute and we've been going strong in the Charlottesville area ever since." 
 
Yes, Charlottesville, Virginia area band Scuffletown has been together for nearly three decades and recently this easy going trio discussed the band's history, music and upcoming September 5 gig at Jamey's House of Music in Lansdale, PA.
Carraway was joined by other founding member John Whitlow and self-professed "Newbie" Matty Metcalfe as the three explained, joked and previewed their fast approaching Jamey's gig and beyond
"I'd seen Marc play at a festival that we were both at and I didn't know who he was when I saw him but I thought, man, that guy, I love what he does and then I asked myself, I wonder if I could weasel my way into play with him?" Laughed Whitlow as he picked up where Carraway left off on how the unit began. "So, I kind of wiggled and squiggled and connected with him informally and after about a year of informal shows, we were getting great feedback on it so we formalized it about 12 months later." 
When listening to Scuffletown, one can not deny that there are various styles and influences which make up their music. Elements of blues, folk and rock only scratch the surface of this veritable cornucopia of styles and tastes which permeate their sound; Carraway couldn't help but laugh as he explained further.
 "That's a great question. I started playing with some folk bands and then got into the bluegrass world where I played banjo and mandolin in a bunch of different bands like that but I always stuck with the acoustic roots. I grew up with a lot of Jimmy Buffet, Gordon Lightfoot, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and that kind of stuff. So, there's a lot of that sprinkled in and when John and I got together we started looking at a lot of roots music and we pulled in a lot of old blues and then we got into world music like reggae and we also did swing, jazz and then of course some good old acoustic Americana and some old classic country songs and things like that. Then when Matty joined, he's got a great musical background in lots of forms of music and he joined and he'll give you his perspective even though he's the latecomer to the band." 
 
"Yeah, I've only been with these guys for 20 years so I'm the rookie, a cub." continued Metcalfe as they all laughed once again. "I met John when he came looking to take accordion lessons. I outfitted him with my smallest accordion and he said that it was way too big and then he invited me to do a couple of Scuffletown shows around 2005 or 2006 and from there we just took off with a really nice friendship. The type of accordion I use with this band is actually a digital accordion made by Roland, it's called a Roland FR4X. So, the left hand has a number of different sample based sounds like bass guitar or acoustic bass and with the right hand, you can get everything from accordion models and tones to Hammond organs, Rhodes pianos, Wurlitzers and stuff like that. I employ all of those bells and whistles with them because Marc takes us into a lot of different sonic geography so I need to be prepared (Laughs)."
 
"You never know what's gonna come out of Matty's accordion," interjected Marc, "We might get a Mexican horn section, we might get a Hammond B3, a Wurlitzer or a duck fart, we never know what's gonna happen (Laughs)." "When Matty is on stage with me, I don't pick up the accordion because he's such a great player. So, we kind of turn the reins over to him for that instrumentation and I fill in with mostly harmonica and some flute," added Whitlow.
 
Fortunately for them, Matty isn't the only one with accordion skills; even if Carraway thinks their abundance of good fortune is a possible "Violation." 
"We recorded four albums and an EP along the way and then somewhere in there John's accordion teacher was Matty and Matty was asked to join us for some big shows we had; we actually have two-thirds of the band that actually plays accordion which probably is a violation of some state laws somewhere but they don't do it at the same time because that's definitely a federal violation so we don't go there but it's kind of great to have that kind of capability to have a lot of different instrumentation on stage with these guys (Laughs)." 
 
Given the fact that they're multi-instrumentalist which perhaps allows room for more creative freedom than most; is there a lot of onstage improvisation during their performances? 
 
"Oh yeah, there has to be, we never rehearse," said Carraway quickly. "We have a wide selection of songs we can pull from and a lot of the time we're feeling the audience out; OK, they're really digging the harmonica so we may put an extra harp solo in the song or stretch it out or kind of swamp it up a bit on this one. Everything we do from the rhythm to the leads is kind of reading off the audience and meeting them where they are with the energy." 
 
Speaking of audiences, they aren't back home in Virginia; do they ever have issues achieving that energy? According to Metcalfe, the answer is no. 
 
"I hope there are no prohibitions against conga lines," he said half-jokingly. "We're talking about a winery in Virginia that kicked several (People) out for having a conga line at one of our shows. I would say that since our song selection is so varied, a lot of songs are familiar to people but not necessarily the number one hit song off an album. So, a lot of times I think it's sort of showing the audience; like the Graham Nash song that we do is sort of embedded in people's imagination but maybe not the first one you'd think of from that artist and Marc writes a lot of great songs, did I mention that he also plays a mean slide and Resonator guitar as well? So, it's a very dynamic show and also so varied that everyone gets a taste of what they like and by the time they are into the show as a whole, we bring them in different directions and they trust that we know where we're going."
 
"As I said, we do adjust to the audience," adds Carraway. "So, if it's a listening show, we may do a little more stories behind the songs but we always have a lot of rhythm and energy to the songs; we call it "Scuffleizing." We might take a song that you've heard before and we're not gonna play it like the original artist, we're gonna play it like Scuffletown. We might take Bob Marley's "One Love" and we do it with slide guitar which gives it a nice kind of swampy edge with a little bit of energy and that's what we're shooting for." 
Scuffletown? The term to "Scuffle" could possibly lean toward a perspective of scattered or fear of moving forward but not so according to John who along with Marc, knew that they were destined to receive his moniker. 
 
"Marc and I had met and were doing informal, kind of drop in shows," explained Whitlow. "There was a little place near both our homes, a crossroad that we both traveled down called Scuffletown Road that had this history of being a blue collar hangout, rough and rowdy place during the '30s depression era; it's just empty cow fields now and every time we'd go down it we'd say, "That'd be a great name for a band." So when we formalized our partnership, we were like, well, we've got to name the band; we actually had a name the band contest at a really great venue called The Speakeasy which no longer exists. We had a full house and three or four options. We simply did the Clap-O-Meter hoping it (Scuffletown) would push the needle all the way to the right as far as it could and that's how it happened, it was very sophisticated branding (Laughs)" 
"John's our marketing director," chimed in Carraway, "Since then, we've found out there are Scuffletowns all over the U.S. and they're all kind of hard drinking, hard fighting kind of communities it seems but it has been fun for us because everything we have been able to take from it. Our followers are Scuffleheads, we have Scuffle Vacations, Scuffle Shows and things like that so we're getting a lot of mileage out of Scuffletown." 
 
The band is heading out on a bit of an undertaking and the September 5 Jamey's House of Music show is a very early stop before heading even farther north and eventually overseas. 
"We're on a northern tour," said Carraway, "We'll start at Jamey's, we'll go to Ithaca, Beverly, Boston, Portsmouth, New Hampshire; Jamey's is a good jumping off point for us and it has a tremendous reputation. We all knew about it, Matty plays up there and has traveled in that area and they are so good at promoting homegrown local music; not necessarily the type of music that's played on Top 40 stations but the really rootsy fun stuff so it's a good fit for us. We mostly play around the Charlottesville area and kind of go out from there. We've traveled as far as Nashville and as far east as Ireland a couple of times and we have a third Ireland trip coming up where we'll hit Dublin and Galway, so we get around a little bit. We actually have a group of about 35 people going with us so that's gonna be a fun trip for us."
