Steve Cavallo: “Stolen Car”

(HACKENSACK, NJ) -- Riverside Gallery presents "The Diversity of Relationships and Memories" - an exhibition of paintings by Steve Cavallo and Kyung Cavallo from September 4-14, 2026.  The exhibition brings together the works of a contemporary figurative artist and an outsider artist couple.

The exhibition, which consists of 40 works exploring childhood, family, loss, and the emotional landscapes shape life, marks a return for the artists who were former residents of New Jersey and are currently residing in North Carolina. Steven’s symbolic imagery—scarecrows, fishbowls, abandoned theaters—reflects themes of confinement, longing, and the search for home. Kyung’s abstract expressionist paintings examine aging, memory, and the enduring bond between mother and child. Together, their work forms a deeply personal reflection on how relationships and memories evolve, fracture, and endure.

This two-artist collaboration explores childhood experiences, evolving relationships, and the intertwining journeys that led to their partnership—first in life, then in art—in the 1990s. Their work reflects the fragility of time, the struggles encountered along the way, and the emotional landscapes shaped by loss, longing, disappointment, and hope. Scenes and memories from South Korea, New York, the American Southwest, and North Carolina appear throughout the exhibition, forming a visual map of their shared and individual histories.

An artist who has focused on the human rights issues, including the Holocaust survivors and the Korean Comfort Women, Steve Cavallo showcases a diverse body of works ranging towards American iconography and personal experiences and relationships. Steve Cavallo has continually expanded his subject matter and style  to include works that appear as psychological snapshots of American cinema which deeply reveals the subconscious of the American culture and identity hidden within.

Why has Steve Cavallo turned his attention from the subject matter of human rights and the resilience of humanity in the face of of evil to the imagery of the American psychological theater, including the cultural motifs of Halloween, the American West, and the everyday life of the American cities and suburbs?  The exhibition suggests different answers for this shift on the part of Steve Cavallo to seek a more personal narrative on the level of personal desire and American cultural identity.
