"I am great! I was in California last weekend and just got back, I have the day off and I'm getting to chat with you so everything is great," says Monster Jam monster truck driver Angelina Nock as she let us in on the profession, her background and what we can expect when she gets behind the wheel of Megalodon at Newark's Prudential Center August 14 through 16.
Angelina describes herself as "Petite" but by all accounts, seems to have an appetite for danger and risk bigger than life itself. Her family business is not something uncommon but far from the norm but to her, it never seemed out of the ordinary.
"I come from a long line of daredevils. I was born in Sarasota, Florida but grew up all over the world because my parents traveled so much. My mom was a trapeze artist for Ringling Brothers and my dad was a daredevil. I performed a daredevil act with my father and we were invited to perform out in California for the weekend and yeah, I do all sorts of crazy things. I perform an act called, "The Sway Poles." I go 80 feet in the air, I performed this act on "America's Got Talent Extreme End Season 17" with my dad and I am also a professional water skier and have been since the age of 12 and added Monster Jam to my resume three years ago so I stay busy between all of that."
"It was just normal to me when I was growing up," she went on, "I didn't really realize it was different until one day I was at school and the kids were just so interested in what my parents did and I was like, "What? Your parents don't do stuff like this (Laughs)?" I grew up; my parents were always performing so that was like my playground. I grew up at a theme park in Wisconsin, it was called "The Tommy Bartlett Show" and they had sponsored boats, it was a big production, So, I water skied my first show when I was 12 and that was when I first got technically paid so yeah, ever since then we've put on shows all over the world. My parents are funny, even though I trained 80 feet in the air, my parents still get scared if I'm a little off on the ladder or even when I brought up driving monster trucks my mom was like, "Are you sure about that?"
Whether she was born into it or not, she is obviously a thrill seeker but how does a daredevil become interested in driving a monster truck?
"I've always had an interest, I just never had the opportunity. After I was on AGT Extreme Season 17 it just kind of fell into my lap. I had the opportunity to tryout, I wasn't too sure how I'd do, I didn't really have a motorsports background at all but I did that whole process and then little did I know, I had a talent for it too and I love to continue my family legacy, it's in my blood, I just love the adrenaline rush."
Given her size, Nock enjoys the challenge of "Handling" the massive bohemeths of Monster Jam and says the trucks are very safe in the event of a mishap or unfortunate turn of events.
"That's part of the game, it's how you handle the landing, how technical you are in driving," she said nonchalantly as if she was riding a bicycle in the park. "I try to hit each jump as square as possible, sometimes you don't hit as square as you like but we have technicians there, where if we rollover there is a whole team in the back ready to fix the truck and get it ready for the next competition."
"If we rollover," the very thought is enough to frighten many. Obviously, one doesn't wake up and say, "Today, I think I'll be a monster truck driver." So, how did she hone her skills? Does she have one at home? Phone a friend, "Hey, can I borrow your monster truck today?" How does one become a monster truck driver and eventually become part of Monster Jam?
"I did not have a monster truck unfortunately, I wish I did," she answered with a laugh. "It is something where we have only a limited time to train. We have what's called, "Monster Jam University" which over our down time, we're able to go there and try things that we're not able to try in the arenas. Starting off, the first half of the tryout, we go to Feld Entertainment's headquarters in Florida; it's actually down the road from me, I live about 15 minutes away. So, it was very convenient for me because they have people fly in from all over the world and from there they narrow it down from say 12 people to four and then the four of us go into a truck just to see how we can handle being in it because we've got these belts and we're harnessed and we can't move our heads left, right, up, down; we're just moving our eyeballs. So, it's also just to see how you can handle driving a monster truck and then if you can get past that; here I am three years later, still learning and improving but I think I've come a long way."
When asked if driving a monster truck interferes with taking part in the family business, she answered quickly.
"Every Monster Jam driver has such a unique story. Everyone does many different things; another fact, my fiance drives monster trucks as well and he is also sometimes a part time NASCAR driver and he has his own racing simulator business but yeah, we all kind of have our own unique stories. So, it's just like most sports, we have a season. Our season basically goes from the first week of January into July where we have our Super Bowl; World Finals is what we call it so that's where it basically ends but then we have our summer series and there aren't as many or as frequent but we do come to The Prudential Center twice a year. This will be my third time coming to The Prudential Center, it's actually one of my favorite ones because of the layout of the floor, it's a pretty big floor for us."
Again, the petite size of Nock would lead one to believe that there may be some difficulty with the rigors of controlling a machine of such size and weight but apparently size "Doesn't" matter; what then, is the hardest part of taking the wheel of a monster truck?
"Exactly that, controlling a monster truck," she replied instantly. "That is the hardest thing I would say and I've come this far; getting it up on two wheels, being able to do that, you'll see us do that for minutes but it has taken me hours, days, three years to get to this point of getting to that level of getting to pop up the truck, being fast around the corners but yeah, I would say that just handling the truck is such a feat itself. To paint a picture, I am five foot nothing, I'm a very petite girl, I have the smallest seat in the Monster Jam fleet, it looks like a car seat. I'm a Mexican-American, so I like to say I'm "Pequena" but I handle this 12,000 pound truck and the tires are taller than me (Laughs). The framework, the engine, the tires themselves are like 600 pounds apiece and it all adds up but even the fiberglass adds to all of it. I love talking about the fiberglass too because each truck is specifically handmade individually at our shop down in Florida and each truck is so neat. That's why I always say it's so important if you are able to come to our pit party because you're able to walk on the floor, meet the drivers, ask us as many questions as you want and you're actually able to take a closer look and understand why this truck weighs 12,000 pounds."
Yes, the "Pit party" is an available ticket option and a totally interactive experience and one of Angelina's favorite things to participate in.
"Absolutely!" She said enthusiastically, "I love the interaction, meeting people, hearing where they are from, hearing their stories; sometimes I am just blown away. Monster Jam goes all over the world but there are certain countries we are not able to reach out to and people come in to see us from everywhere, not just local like let's say New Jersey; people are coming from hours away, even thousands of miles on planes. So, it's super neat to be able to meet the crowd, every stop is so different and you definitely see that when you meet everyone at the pit party."
Attending a Monster Jam event such as the one at The Prudential Center can be very loud due to the indoor confines and the vehicle's raw generated power. Many in the crowd wear noise reducing earmuffs or headphones but what about the drivers? The decibel level must be a danger to them, right? Does it vary or does she have to adjust from truck to truck?
"My helmet actually has earmuffs and I'm hooked up to a radio in my helmet as well, so if I have my helmet outside of the truck or I'm not hooked up to the radio, you'll catch me saying, "What" a lot but yeah, my crew chief, he or she can read my eyes and then if I'm feeling something with the truck, I radio into them, "Hey, I'm feeling a little off over here" and then we'll look into it afterwards but that's also part of driving the trucks; people don't realize we're communicating outside of our trucks to other people as well. Typically, we are designated to the same truck but sometimes we do get moved around but that's also part of it; it's like bringing your toolbox to the next truck and using those tools on that truck, you have to adjust to different trucks. I typically stick to the same chassis but I only drive Megalodon.They do such a great job at pairing us with our trucks, I don't think I could have been paired any better. I'm from Florida, grew up by the water, grew up water skiing all over the place and I just love the truck and it's one of Monster Jam's most known trucks so I'm so honored to be able to drive it."
Once the pit party has ended, what is next? Nock says she has a routine and then the evening devolves into friendly competition.
"We have about 30 minutes to get ready. I just go checkout my gear, I like to make sure everything is set in place and ready to go, I go check in with my crew chief, we do a couple of interactive interviews with the crowd before the event starts, so that's always fun; basically, I like to make sure everything is set, the mindset is there, the energy is there and then I am ready to perform. The night is split up into three competitions and in each competition you're trying to gain as many points as possible so you win at the end of the event the overall. We start off in an arena with eight trucks and I start off with racing and that narrows it down to two and then whoever wins the racing competition gets the first set of points. Then you go into two wheel skills and I thought racing would be my thing but I've come to realize that I've got a bit more talent popping up the truck on two wheels. So, that's probably one of my favorite things and what I prefer to do and that one is actually up to the crowd. We have a judge also but the other half of the points that we get are all accumulated through everyone's phone. So, we have the crowd download an app and vote for the best trick so we're trying to woo the crowd as much as possible and then we move on to the Monster Jam Freestyle where we get 60 to 75 seconds where we can show you guys what we have and what we can do. We are popping wheelies, we are popping the truck up on the nose and trying to get in as much as possible within those seconds to impress the crowd. I enjoy popping the truck up on two wheels and doing sky wheelies. Sky wheelies came naturally to me, I'm not afraid of heights so still to this day I try to get the truck up as high as possible."
Logistically, moving monster trucks at the event's end must be an interesting undertaking and Nock did not disagree.
"They pop the tires off and put them on tractor tires and two trucks go into each trailer and then they get transported from city to city and between stops, they'll go to our Florida shop and do maintenance; it's such an incredible process and so much goes into getting these trucks ready for the weekend and each event."
Friday August 14 is a 7 p.m. start time and is the only day without a pit party. Saturday August 15 sees two shows, one at noon and the other at 6 p.m. with the pit party before the early show from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and Sunday's 1 p.m. show sees the pit party from 10:30 a.m. until noon.
