Lazlo, founder of BlowUpRadio.com (an online radio station based around New Jersey artists), shines a light on some of the many new releases from NJ based musicians with this column. This week Lazlo takes a look at new releases by Deardarkhead, 3 Dollars, CR & The White Lights, Stephanie Seymour, and Lucky Star. Plus a look back at "Sorry Can't Make You Feel The Pain" by Past Having Doubt.
Deardarkhead - "The Pendulum Swings". Some people look don on instrumentals as not being rock, but if you think the songs on Deardarkhead's new album "The Pendulum Swings" could be improved by having vocals I would strongly disagree. The dreamy-shoegaze-pop-rock songs are magical.
3 Dollars - "Plus Tax". The notes on 3 Dollars' Bandcamp page describes their new EP, "Plus Tax", as balancing, "adolescence and nostalgia, built through sharp melodies, hooky riffs, and raw emotion."
As true as that is, it doesn't convey how electrifying this EP is. Give it a listen.
CR & The White Lights - "My Old Self". CR Gennone's latest band is CR & The White Lights, and their debut, "My Old Self", is some outstanding alt-country/Americana! Anything else I say is you going to more for you to read instead of listening to this wonderful album.
Stephanie Seymour - "Grand Isle". "Grand Isle" contains 3 songs written by Stephanie Seymour, and 3 very interesting covers (it is not everyday I hear covers of Chris Hartford, Ron Sexsmith, and Daniel Lanois songs). The result is music to comfort you. Chill and relaxing, but not really mellow, with harmonies that I felt like I was floating on.
Lucky Star - "Lucky Star". If you like dreamy-indie-pop then you must listen to Lucky Star's self-titled album. 'Nuff said.
Not New, But Memorable Corner
Past Having Doubt - "Sorry Can't Make You Feel The Pain". In the early 2000's emo was everywhere, and when it was a good it was darn entertaining. Past Having Doubt were one of those darn entertaining emo bands, fronted by Ben Hughes (who now fronts the indie-folk-rock band Night Windows). Their 7 song release "Sorry Can't Make You Feel The Pain" has just been remastered and re-released after Ben found an unscratched CD copy.
