New Jersey-based filmmaker, photographer, and visual artist Jay Franklin recently won three awards at the International Movie Awards for his short film Tumbleweave: Best Indie Short, Best Dark Comedy (Jury Award), and Best Actor for lead performer Mike C. Scott. The film, running approximately two minutes and fifty seconds, was selected in the Indie Short (Low Budget) category and represents Franklin's first international festival recognition.
The Best Dark Comedy Jury Award carries particular weight, as it represents a deliberate decision by a panel of industry judges who singled out Tumbleweave from among competing entries. Mike C. Scott's Best Actor recognition further validates the film as a complete work of craft, not simply a strong concept.
Tumbleweave is a mockumentary that chronicles the complete life cycle of hair weave, from initial placement and adhesive bonding to its eventual detachment and unexpected freedom as the wandering phenomenon known as Tumbleweave. The film features fictional researcher Dr. Lace Fruont, whose passionate field study invites audiences to reconsider something long dismissed. The result is a film that is equal parts absurdist comedy and quiet social observation.
Jay Franklin is a New Jersey-based filmmaker, visual artist, and photographer with 14 years of professional experience across broadcast, narrative, commercial, and documentary production. Driven by the belief that every person and every moment carries a story worth telling, Franklin uses film and visual media to illuminate what society too often dismisses as ordinary. He is the creative force behind a growing short film series and continues to develop projects that challenge audiences to look more closely at the world around them. He operates under his production company Rule of 3rd Mvmt.
"Everyone has a story that needs to be told. We live in a time of microwave moments, where people feel unseen and unheard. My work exists to slow the frame down long enough for someone to actually be seen," said Jay Franklin.
The film is the first entry in a developing short film series built around Franklin's central artistic philosophy: that the mundane, the overlooked, and the seemingly insignificant are never without depth or meaning. Franklin uses familiar, even comedic subjects as a means of drawing audiences into conversations about the human experience they might otherwise pass over.
A multi-disciplinary artist, Franklin works across filmmaking, videography, photography, and production. His professional credits include visual media production for the New Jersey Assembly Democratic Majority and video journalism for PBS/WNET. He has produced work for Senator Cory Booker and covered live events at Lincoln Center. He operates as an independent creative whose portfolio spans documentary, narrative, commercial, and editorial content.
Tumbleweave continues its festival run and is available online. Franklin's next short film, They Call Her Rose, is in development and will expand the series further.
