Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites... 06/04/2026

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 06/04/2026

"I am absolutely wonderful," laughed the always gracious and warm Bill Medley. "How are you doing? We're out here doing our thing, enjoying it, having a ball. I can't figure it out; well I know why people are showing up, they want to hear those songs."

"Those Songs" are what those going to Red Bank's Count Basie Center on Friday June 5 and/or Caesar's Palace Circus Maximus Theatre on June 6 are in for and Medley guarantees it.

"Yeah, I get asked all of the time; "How can you sing "Lovin' Feeling" for 60 years? It's really all about the audience," he readily explained. "When you start singing the song, you can see all of the love rushing up to the stage and people start snuggling with each other and this and that; it makes you feel like you're doing the song for the first time. So, you never get tired of it and we were blessed with really good songs; I can say that because I didn't write them (Laughs) so they're very fun to do. "Lovin' Feeling" was a hit in '65, "Rock 'N Roll Heaven" was around 1974. "Lovin' Feeling" was in the movie "Top Gun" and it was getting all kinds of airplay like it was a hit record."

The Righteous Brothers formed in 1962 and have permeated our airwaves, televisions, movie theaters and stages ever since. The duo of Medley and the late Bobby Hatfield sang some of the most memorable hits spanning multiple generations, decades and tastes but one thing is sure, they've earned their "Mailbox money."

"Yeah, I think you're right," he laughed when told that they've done exceptionally well with licensing. "We call it mailbox money and it has been really good to us. We did, "I've Had The Time Of My Life" and I think the songwriters were from Jersey; Franke Previte, talented guys that wrote that song. The industry has changed dramatically and I'm not sure it's for the good. The only reason you want to get airplay on Spotify or what have you is to get people to come out and see you. I feel really bad for the young artists who have to depend on that but at least they have that. They can go out and sell their records when they're performing and merchandise; I guess it works its way out but I don't know."

With the passing of Hatfield and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2003, Medley could've easily rested on his laurels but instead, he chose to honor his late partner and continue the duo's "Legacy." So, after taking some time off, Medley recruited the talents of Bucky Heard and the two, along with their band have been thrilling audiences of all ages ever since.

"We've been together for 11 years and we're having a great time," he said with enthusiasm. "We put together a band in Las Vegas and it's pretty much the same guys; we've had a couple of people change but it's pretty much the same band. We do anywhere from an hour and 15 minutes to an hour-and-a-half; it all depends on the audience really, if they're having a good time we're having a good time. So, most of the time, we are on for an hour-and-a-half and we do all the hits. We do all the songs, we know why they are there so we do them and we love doing them. Sometimes I think that some of these cover bands that I go see, they're about as good as the original guys and you know you're gonna hear all the hits because that's what they do. I can remember when I was young, I'd go see the acts that I loved and they wouldn't do their hits or only do a couple of them because they were always pushing their new stuff and yeah, it was a little disappointing."

When asked what it feels like to look out from the stage and see generations of fans, parents, grandparents, grandchildren and 20-somethings knowing that some of their songs are far older than an ever growing younger fan base, Medley is thrilled but like many, thinks that the state of music itself in this day and age may be part of the reason.

"Absolutely right, it's just wonderful to see younger people in the audience digging it and liking it," he quickly agreed. "Listen, it's great when anybody likes your music (Laughs) but it's really interesting and wonderful for younger people to love this music because music has changed so much over the last 20 years. So, we feel really honored when the younger generation likes us. It's very interesting because I don't know what they're gonna be dancing to or having sung at their weddings or graduations; they're not putting out that kind of music today and the younger generation are saying, wait a minute, THAT was music and what I'm listening to today; people always want to be touched, myself included. When you hear music, you want to be taken back in your mind about a great time or when some girl broke your heart (Laughs) or whatever and I just don't see a lot of that today."

One might think with all of their experiences and accolades that picking a standout memory would be difficult and although he momentarily hesitated, Medley fondly recalled something from early on in Righteous Brothers lore.

"I think it was in '66, Bobby and I opened for Jack Benny (Laughs) and we got to do like a 20 minute monologue with Jack Benny and we just loved it. The Righteous Brothers were just a couple of years ahead of The Beatles and The Beach Boys. So, we kind of came up enjoying and loving that era. We were huge fans of Jack Benny, Martin and Lewis and that whole bunch. So, I think working with Jack Benny in '66 probably was our biggest thing, probably because we were pretty young and it was kind of an out of body experience being on stage with somebody you idolized and it was great."
