Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites... 04/23/2026

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 04/23/2026

April 26, 2009; 17 years to the day this Sunday that "Danny Coleman's Rock On Radio" took to the airwaves on WIFI 1460 AM radio. Can it be that long? The answer is yes it can be and yes it has.

"Rock On Radio" was subconsciously conceived on a hot July night circa 1978 or was it '79? A then 16 year old Danny Coleman was at the Saint Anthony's Church carnival when a classmate approached him and said, "Listen!"  Not understanding the urgency in her tone nor why she was dragging him with fingernails deeply dug into his forearm over to a wheel of chance; he reluctantly went along. Upon arriving at her preset destination, he was greeted with the sounds of his band Valhalla blaring their song "We're Alright" from the transistor radio perched atop the shelf amongst the prizes. Coleman instantly went numb from head to toe because there is something special, even today about hearing oneself on the radio. You see, Valhalla had gone into Tom Marolda's Mercerville studio at the age of 15/16 and recorded several tracks so that they could enter the WPST "Unsigned Heroes" contest. This was a contest where bands submitted music, DJs such as Dave Hoeffel, Tom Cunningham and others played the tunes and fans voted on who they wanted to advance to another round in an on air battle of the bands. Win, lose or draw didn't matter, it was hearing ourselves on the radio that was the real thrill.

Many years later, a 16 year old Coleman now stood at 46 and faced the reality of re-inventing himself after a career ending back injury. Searching the "Help Wanted" sections of newspapers and job boards, it was a Craigslist ad that caught his eye; "Radio show hosts/ideas wanted." So, he called the number, set up a meeting with the program director of WIFI 1460 AM and armed with the memory of the feeling at that church carnival decades prior, set out to pitch a one hour program featuring musicians, bands, solo artists and entertainers called "Rock On Radio," a phrase that was echoed on a daily basis by his band mate Mike Mattaliano as well as Mike's coworker, Kim Sentek. Coleman thought that if he was so thrilled about hearing himself on the radio, others would be also. So, he set out to feature musicians of all varieties on what is still now a weekly program.

The first show aired (Barely) on April 26, 2009 and featured his own band, WC Soulshine. Once arriving at the Burlington County station, Coleman and his guests were greeted with locked doors; it seems the program director forgot about the show's debut and everyone had gone home for the evening, leaving the station on autopilot. After several frantic phone calls, a night janitor granted us access to the station and its studios but Coleman was forced to engineer his own show on equipment that was totally foreign to him. After much experimentation and collaboration, "Rock On Radio" went live 15 minutes late and remained a live broadcasted show through September of 2020; only pre recording from April through August due to the COVID Pandemic.

After three years of terrestrial AM radio broadcasts on Sundays from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m., Coleman made the move to internet broadcasting. The first stop was an affiliate called Hamilton Radio. He was also broadcasting on New Jersey Stage's radio station, "The Penguin." Gene Pierro, aka "Doc G" at Hamilton Radio and Gary Wien at The Penguin welcomed the show with open arms and were extremely supportive.

Times and opinions changed and the show moved several times, from Hamilton Radio to 40 Foot Hole Radio, then to PA/NJ Radio, then to City of Angels Radio and currently now on Dekoentertainment.com but one thing stayed consistent, the incredible talents that graced the studios each week.

There have been several co-hosts, photographers, two engineers (Both named Art) and yet as the faces changed, the show kept going and only got better when now producer/engineer Claire Henwood came aboard. Claire's vivacious personality, wisecracks and timely questions enhanced the show's value as well as gave it that something extra that opens up doors and opportunities.

This Sunday, April 26, 2026, the "17th Anniversary Retrospective" airs at 7 p.m. on Dekoentertainment.com, Thepenguinrocks.com and Mixcloud.com/thepenguin. Danny, Claire and Madison, the show's social media maven entertain calls from past guests sharing their thoughts and experiences from their appearances, they also discuss the show's history, the people they've lost over the years and the future of the program.
