Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...11/13/25

By Danny Coleman

"I'm packing up the new Renaissance CD from the last tour we recorded live. I've got a little cottage industry here, I'm completely involved in it; I think that tells you everything, it's fine but just a lot of work," laughed the quintessential female progressive rock voice Annie Haslam as she discussed a reunion of original band mates for their upcoming "History of Renaissance" series of shows; one of which is November 28 at the Newton Theatre in NJ and November 29 at the Lansdowne Theater in PA.

Formed in 1969 from the ashes of The Yardbirds by drummer Jim McCarty and vocalist Keith Relf, Renaissance wanted to go in a different musical direction; one quoted as, "Something with a more classical influence." Sadly, they recorded their debut self-titled album and the band then began to splinter during the sessions for their sophomore offering "Illusion." Haslam, best known for a five octave vocal range and her elegant stage presence has been a mainstay of the band since circa 1972 and was one of the pieces of what would become the group's rebirth of sorts.

Over their nearly seven decades of existence, personnel changes, hiatuses and trials, Renaissance has influenced many artists, generations and musicians the world over and with this series of, "The History of Renaissance" shows, Haslam, who has kept the band going over this latest span of time, turned to her friend McCarty fo a bit of assistance.

"The last time you and I spoke, oh my God, that was 2017," she said with surprise. "I was doing the paintings to hang behind the orchestra and that was amazing; time is going so fast as well isn't it? We look in the mirror now and say, Who is that? (Laughs) Who the Hell is that? (Laughs). Yes, Jim and Keith were founding members and we've toured a bit every year since 2017, we went to Germany. We did do a farewell tour last October due to my age, the responsibility of everything was getting to be a bit too much for me and I also needed a knee replacement. I was in agony last year, it was a terrible year for me and so I had to make a decision to get that done and I thought well, we'll do a final tour first; I really should've had my knee done so I was in pain through the whole tour, it was very difficult but it turned out well. We did 10 shows and that was that and I had my knee replacement in January. I then got an email asking me to do a one woman show and I thought, "No" (Laughs) and then it morphed from there. The gentlemen wouldn't let it go, I would've let it go, I wouldn't have pushed it but he was adamant to keep this going and trying to find a solution to it and it was like an angel tapped me on the shoulder and said, "Hello? Call Jim, he was at your audition, he wrote the songs that got you the job" and he was a founding member so; who better? There is nobody better than that, he started the band. So, in the end it happened but it was so late in the day, it was September and it was difficult to get shows because shows are booked six to nine months to a year ahead these days and we found out that if Jim came over, he'd have had to be back in the U.K. by December 6 or something like that. So, we had a time period to work with and then again, there weren't many shows that were available. So, it was very odd the way it happened but I caught up with Bill Rogers at BRE in Philly who had been booking us for years with something completely different and he asked, "What are you up to?" I told him and he said, "Oh? I'd buy that show" and so I had never thought of that. I never thought of it ever going any further really or wanting it to; not because I didn't want to do it but only because I thought there would be lots of things to deal with and sort out like flights and all kinds of things like that, all the usual things that you have to have people to do for you. In the end, we got the two shows in Newton, New Jersey on November 28 and Lansdowne, PA on November 29; that's the story (Laughs)."

Years of history both past and present are able to unfold and will be brought to light by two people who have lived through it as Annie and McCarty will be opening up the evening by telling stories from yesterday and today.

"So, what we're doing is, Jim and I are going to come out at the beginning of the evening for 30 minutes because we want to do a good Renaissance show but play some of Jim's stuff as well; a long show really. So we're going to do 30 minutes, talk to the audience about how Renaissance was started; how we were started and then the band will come out and we'll perform five of Jim's songs and then we have an intermission and then the whole band comes out. Jim is not playing drums at all, the band will be playing his songs and he's going to be playing rhythm guitar and singing and I'll be singing "Face of Yesterday" which is one of my favorite Renaissance songs that I did when I first toured with the band and I'll be doing backing vocals; there is just so much history."

"Like I said, we couldn't get many shows because everything was taken because people book six, nine months to a year ahead for tours and everything was taken," she went on. "So, we could only get the Edwardsville,Illinois show, they actually moved some things around to accommodate us because we did a show there last year and Newton had that day open so we booked it. I pray that people have the time to come out and see us because it will be a great show; especially for Renaissance fans, it will be wonderful."

One would think with her talk of reducing tour dates and despite all of their accomplishments that they may be content to rest on their laurels a bit but Haslam, along with McCarty seemingly have an eye on the future or at least keeping the door open a crack.

"Jim was in the 50th Anniversary Show, " she said excitedly, "He joined us for "Island" and "Ashes Are Burning," he's such a great guy. Jim is going to be staying down here as we have a few days off before the Newton show and we're planning to write a song together; let's see what happens with that. I'm not saying no that if we were asked to do this again but it is a huge amount of work to put something like this together; I'd like to go on a holiday somewhere (Laughs). I love doing this but I know now why I retired the band, a lot of people have no idea what goes into this. A lot of people have a staff of at least 10 people or more and that's the difference. I've kept the band going for a few years now and we've done some great things; we'll see what happens. We don't know what's happening in the world and we've all got to live with that right now and that's not easy; you know?"

Many progressive rock bands from the past are discovering new life with younger audiences but Annie feels that Renaissance may be slightly behind in the current resurgence due to a lack of visibility.

"We haven't toured enough really and that's because of management; not our early management, not John Sherrill or Miles Copeland but recently we had someone who just didn't know what he was doing really and so we left that realm I think with a lot of time wasted. I don't know what the future holds really but we're getting a lot of young people who are usually the kids of the fans who get turned onto it but out of the blue we'll get emails from kids saying they just discovered our music. There is nothing like it and that's the thing, it's unique and timeless like Yes songs are timeless and Genesis songs. You have certain fans who don't get fed up with it because every time you listen it's brilliant. We don't have enough shows to see if we have a shift in our demographic. I'm sure if we did a lot more touring it would have escalated more but unfortunately, we didn't have the foresight. Like with Carnegie Hall, we never filmed, why not? Royal Albert Hall was never filmed, why not? It's ridiculous really but that's what it is and if anything was different I wouldn't be sitting here now and probably wouldn't be painting and that's my second love in my life. I haven't been doing that very much but I am painting violins for Mark Wood of Trans-Siberian Orchestra; do you know Mark? He left them and started his own violin business building violins that look like the Flying V guitar, "The Viper." Look him up, he's doing some amazing stuff. He goes around to colleges and schools, universities and puts on these shows with the kids who play violin, it's unbelievable and very interesting, have a look at it and what he's doing, it's brilliant."

When the band first formed in 1969, "Internet" was a term heard only probably on fishing boats but with its emergence came opportunity, opportunity to get art to the masses which has both good and bad points. Haslam's experience has taught her much and so, based on today's world, she offers some advice.

"There's some bad things about the internet but some good things as well. There are more outlets for music now than there ever was, especially with social media but then again, there is more competition out there as well, isn't there? There are some brilliant assets, I always advise people that are thinking of becoming a musician to make sure they have a proper job because there is no guarantee with anything these days; there never was actually but if anything goes wrong you've got to have it. When you're doing well it's like, my goodness, this is never gonna end but when it does, you need to have some kind of trade."

Decades later, there has been no "End" to Renaissance but as they possibly wind down and bring us shows such as this, perhaps a once in so many years opportunity, Haslam looks very much forward to taking the stage.

"I just hope people come to the show because it's going to be very special. I hope they can carve out some time to come because it's going to be very different and I'm excited about it."
