Rachel Carlson conducts the Kean University Community Chorale, a group of students, faculty, staff, and local community members.
When Director of Choral and Vocal Activities Rachel Carlson began her journey at Kean University four years ago, she envisioned creating stronger connections between the University and the surrounding community. That vision came to life in Spring 2022 with the launch of the Kean Community Chorale, an ensemble that unites students, alumni, faculty, staff and local residents in a shared celebration of music.
“It’s been incredibly successful and clearly something this community was looking for, based on the enthusiastic response and strong participation,” said Carlson.
The chorale meets weekly and culminates each semester with a public concert that opens with a performance by a local high school ensemble, further strengthening Kean’s connection to the surrounding arts community. This fall, Newark Arts High School will open the show on Sunday, December 7th.
Kean alumni continue to play an active role in the chorale, including Makiah Robinson ’22, who now serves as assistant conductor for Voices Chorale New Jersey.
“Community Chorale is an incredible part of the Kean music experience for students and alumni,” Robinson said. “It serves as a bridge that connects people through music and provides a valuable opportunity to strengthen musicianship skills. For alumni and community members, it offers a meaningful way to stay connected to the Kean community while sharing in the joys of music making.”
Carlson said one of the most rewarding aspects of the chorale is maintaining relationships with students after they graduate.
“Instead of beginning each year with a new group of first-year students, we sustain momentum through our alumni,” she said. “They continue to return, offering mentorship and helping current students refine their skills and techniques, creating a powerful sense of continuity within the program.”
Robinson added that the ensemble enhances musical growth and fosters continued connection with Kean music students.
“I find it important to participate in the Community Chorale because there is always something new to learn as a musician,” added Robinson. “This ensemble also allows me to sing with some of my former classmates and is not only a space for artistic expression, but also a place where I continue to grow as a vocalist.”
The Kean University Fall Choral Concert will take place on Sunday, December 7, 2025 at Enlow Recital Hall. Admission is free for all attendees. Showtime is 4:00pm.
