South Camden Theatre Company presents "DOT" by Colman Domingo

(CAMDEN, NJ) -- Celebrate 20 years of professional theatre in Camden with the final production of the 2025 season by South Camden Theatre Company - DOT by Colman Domingo. Performances run weekends from November 8-23, 2025. The New York Times said this play is "A thoroughly entertaining comedy-drama! An impressive advance for Colman Domingo."

The holidays are always a wild family affair at the Shealy household. But this year, Dotty and her three grown children - Shelly, an overwhelmed attorney, Donnie, a gay music writer with marital problems, and Averie, an aspiring actress hoping to appear on Celebrity Mud Fight - clash over how best to care for their proud, lovable matriarch. As Dotty struggles to hold on to her memory, her children must fight to balance caring for her with caring for themselves. This twisted and hilarious play grapples unflinchingly with aging parents, midlife crises, and the heart of a West Philly neighborhood.

Artistic Director, Dawn Varava, can't wait for the Camden audience to see this show. "During these challenging times, we all need an opportunity to laugh. And, laugh you will along with this family as they deal with their mother's dementia. Colman Domingo is such an incredible storyteller that his dialogue will pull you into the story. You'll laugh with the family, but you'll also feel their pain."

The cast includes excellent professional actors: Nancy Marie as Dot, Tasha Holmes as Shelly, Malik Muhammad as Donnie, Janan Ashton as Averie, Christopher David Roche as Adam, Alli Smalley as Jackie, and Bastion Carboni as Fidel. You won't want to miss this family as they struggle to find a way to care for their mother.

DOT opens Friday, November 7, and runs through Sunday, November 23, 2025. Performances are on Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:00pm and on Sundays at 2:00pm at Camden's only free-standing independent Waterfront South Theatre on the corner of 4th Street and Jasper Street in the Waterfront South historic neighborhood.

DOT premiered regionally at People's Light Theatre Company in Malvern, PA, in 2019. It makes its way across the bridge to Camden under the direction of Ms. Zuhairah McGill, a Philadelphia-based equity actor and director along with an incredible cast. Ms. McGill has an intimate relationship with the play, as she starred as Shelly, Dot's eldest daughter, in the regional premiere directed by the playwright, Colman Domingo.

As a celebrated playwright, Colman Domingo has written several plays, written the book for the musical Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, and directed for theatre and TV. Domingo's work spans various media, showcasing his exceptional talent as a multifaceted artist in film, television, and theater. As an actor, Domingo has received numerous accolades, including the 2022 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series. He was Emmy-nominated for the Netflix comedy series The Four Seasons and received consecutive Academy Award for Best Actor nominations for his portrayals of civil rights activist Bayard Rustin in the biopic Rustin and a prison inmate in the drama Sing Sing.

South Camden Theatre Company was incorporated on October 6, 2005. They are a professional theatre company that works hard to produce their shows with paid actors, directors, and designers. They are lead by a non-profit theatre board. The individuals who work on the board of directors are all volunteers. They do what they do out of love for theatre and for the community. Together, the company produces some of the best theatre productions in the area. Your attendance and support are what they need to help them meet their goals. Please join them. You’ll be impressed with what you see on their stage. They promise you won’t be disappointed.

As Camden’s first professional theater they enhance the community by creating quality artistic productions while anchoring The Waterfront South Arts District. They strive to promote South Camden’s rebirth as a destination by providing a positive experience for its residents and those from the surrounding region. Their goal is to entertain, engage, and educate.
