Dragonfly Multicultural Arts Center presents "Macbeth"

originally published: 10/15/2025

(PLAINFIELD, NJ) -- Dragonfly Multicultural Arts Center will bring one of Shakespeare's most haunting tragedies to life this fall with its production of Macbeth, running October 24 through November 2, 2025, at the duCret Center of Art. Macbeth tells the chilling story of a Scottish nobleman whose ambition, stoked by prophecy and manipulation, drives him to murder and madness. Filled with witches, ghosts, and unforgettable poetry, this timeless play explores the corrupting power of unchecked desire and the devastating consequences of moral compromise.

Presented with Dragonfly’s signature multicultural approach and a dynamic cast, this production promises an intimate, contemporary take on Shakespeare’s dark masterpiece while preserving the play’s thrilling language and atmosphere.

“Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s most powerful and fast-paced tragedies,” says Catherine LaMoreaux, Artistic Director of Dragonfly Multicultural Arts Center. “We’re excited to bring audiences a modern interpretation that highlights both the psychological depth and supernatural intrigue of the story—especially during the Halloween season.”

Performances will take place Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00pm and Sundays at 2:00pm, including a special Halloween performance on Friday, October 31. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $15 for students and seniors. Seating is limited, and advance purchase is recommended. Tickets are available for purchase online. duCret Center of Art is located at 1030 Central Avenue, Plainfield, New Jersey.

The production stars Andrew Parks as Macbeth, Debjani Banerjee as Lady Macbeth, and Celia Castro as Lady Macduff.

A newcomer to Dragonfly, Andrew Parks has been performing Shakespeare for more than 35 years, appearing with Chester Theatre Group, the New Jersey Renaissance Kingdom, and McCarter Theatre’s outreach program. His past roles include Iago (Othello), Don Armado (Love’s Labour’s Lost), and Simonides (Pericles). He has also directed The Merchant of Venice, Twelfth Night, and King Lear. Parks is also choreographing the production’s fight scenes.

Debjani Banerjee, returning to Dragonfly Arts for her fourth production, has been a theatre practitioner for over 15 years. She has played lead roles in plays directed by renowned directors including Mahesh Dattani, Dr. Farley Richmond, and Dan Swern and is performing artist with CoLAB Arts in New Brunswick. Trained in a wide range of acting styles and stagecraft, she has performed at theatre festivals across the U.S. and participated in workshops with Bond Street Theatre (NYC), the National School of Drama (Mumbai), and the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey. She recently starred in Elijah, a short film that has earned multiple awards at film festivals in the U.S. and Canada.

Celia Castro, who plays Lady Macduff, comes to Dragonfly from the world of opera, where she has performed as a dramatic soprano for most of her career. In recent years, she has collaborated with Mexican composer Max Lifchitz, performing his classical scena Rosa Divina at Bruno Walter Hall at Lincoln Center, Merkin Concert Hall, University at Albany’s Performing Arts Center, and the National Opera Center. She has also curated a series of lecture recitals for the Queens Public Library—both in-person and online—focused on Spanish art song, women composers, and opera.

The cast includes many more talented local actors including Thaddeus Micah Salters, Norman Hill, Melyssa Searcy, Breanna, Shad, Dion More Hedi Molnar, Eloy A. Rosario and more. The play is directed by Dragonfly artistic director Catherine LaMoreaux.
