Gateway Playhouse to Hold Open Auditions for Holiday Show "Scrooge the Musical"

All performance levels and backgrounds welcome

originally published: 10/03/2025

(SOMERS POINT, NJ) -- Gateway Playhouse will host open auditions for the Christmas classic "Scrooge the Musical" on Thursday, October 9, 2025 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. The Gateway welcomes ages 16 and up to audition regardless of performance experience, race, gender identity, or theatrical background.

Based on Charles Dickens’ beloved “A Christmas Carol,” “Scrooge the Musical” brings the timeless holiday tale to life with warmth, humor and unforgettable music by Leslie Bricusse. The story follows miserly Ebenezer Scrooge on his magical Christmas Eve journey, complete with the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come, as he discovers the true spirit of the season. Lively songs, dazzling production numbers and heartfelt moments fill this festive classic that is the perfect show for the whole family.

“Christmas is a wonderful time of year anywhere, but especially here at the Gateway,” said Artistic Director Phil Pallitto. “Each year we strive to create the most festive and memorable holiday experience for our audiences, and what better way to do that but with this beloved story known by all? What makes it even more special is the beautiful music that accompanies Scrooge’s 24-hour journey toward redemption.”

The musical will be directed by Chip Garrison, who also directed last year’s holiday smash hit “White Christmas” and “A New London Christmas Carol” in 2023. Auditioners should prepare a one-minute song to sing either a cappella, with a recording or bring sheet music for an accompanist (provided), as well as perform a monologue from the show, which will be provided during auditions and can be found in advance at GatewayByTheBay.org.

Rehearsals will begin October 11 and will typically be held two to three times per week, including some weekends, leading up to tech week. Attendance at all technical and dress rehearsals is required. Performances are December 5-7 and 12-14, with both evening and matinee shows. Actors must be available all performance dates.
