(TENAFLY, NJ) -- Acc Gallery presents a Jinchul Kim Solo Show - "Cinema 25: The color of Liminality" from August 9-30, 2025. This exhibition presents Kim's latest works, which draw inspiration from cinematographic composition and image manipulation, blending these visual approaches through the language of painting to create connections across different artistic elements. It provides an opportunity to engage with Kim’s innovative exploration of liminality and the interplay between film and painting.
The opening reception and Gallery Talk are scheduled for Saturday, August 9 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.
Artist Statement: I am deeply interested in exploring and redefining the boundaries of various concepts that have often been rigidly categorized under the term "aesthetics." This pursuit leads me to innovatively reconstruct the preconceived definitions established by the art world in the past, integrating diverse perspectives to create a more inclusive language. Throughout this process, I develop unique personal semiotics and investigate new possibilities for painterly expression based on it. My semiotic explorations are strongly reflected in my work, which is combined with meticulous synchronic strategies.
Whether in abstract or expressive environments, I favor a formal approach that builds painting on a solid structure. This method encourages viewers to actively engage with the visual "game," revealing and concealing meaning through newly presented compositions. The tension and harmony created by the structural firmness of the painting, along with the aesthetic beauty of its surface, also play significant roles in my work.
The philosophical ideas rooted in Husserl's phenomenology, Deleuze's assemblage theory, quantum mechanics, and the intersection of modern physics and philosophy form a core foundation for my artistic thought. Through this theoretical reflection, I continuously seek to reinterpret the essence of painting and to understand reality not as a fixed essence or identity, but as something defined by difference, relation, and constant change, explored through aesthetic experimentation.
