Spotlight Players presents "Freaky Friday: The Musical"

(MATAWAN, NJ) -- What if you could spend just one day in someone else's shoes... and that someone happened to be your teenage daughter? Or your high-strung mom? That's the hilarious and heartwarming premise behind Freaky Friday: The Musical, coming to the Spotlight Players stage August 1–10, 2025 at the Presbyterian Church of Matawan.

Based on the beloved Disney film, Freaky Friday is a musical comedy packed with pop-rock songs, high-energy choreography, and big Broadway heart. With a book by Bridget Carpenter (Friday Night LightsParenthood) and music by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winners Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey (Next to NormalIf/Then), the story follows Katherine, a perfectionist wedding planner and mom, and Ellie, her spirited teenage daughter, who wake up one morning in each other’s bodies. Chaos ensues, of course—but so does understanding, growth, and a whole lot of unexpected laughs.

“This show is like a confetti cannon of joy, heart, and family dynamics,” says director Chuck Cutaia-Hamilton. “It’s about how we see the people closest to us—and how walking a mile in someone else’s shoes might just change everything.”

Freaky Friday is brought to life by an incredible creative team, including musical direction by Justin Ryan, choreography by Isabella Taylor, and assistant direction by Lizzy Stefanic. The cast features a vibrant mix of seasoned performers and rising local talent.

Performances run: Friday, August 1 & Saturday, August 2 at 8:00pm; Sunday, August 3 at 3:00pm; Encore weekend: August 8 & 9 at 8:00pm; and August 10 at 3:00pm. Tickets are available for purchase online.  All performances will be held at The Presbyterian Church of Matawan (883 Route 34) in Matawan, New Jersey.
