The Maplewood Strollers presents "The Colored Museum" by George C. Wolfe

originally published: 03/10/2025

(MAPLEWOOD, NJ) -- The Maplewood Strollers presents The Colored Museum across two weekends (March 14-16 and March 21-22, 2025) at The Burgdorff Center. This critically acclaimed play by George C. Wolfe takes a deep dive into African American identity through a series of engaging sketches and songs.

With its unique blend of humor and satire, the play tackles important themes like stereotypes, what it means to be Black and the relevance of these themes to our society today.

The cast includes Darryl Dwayne, Laura Michelle McDonald, Shawn Miles, Tasha R. Williams, Marc Laurent Plaskett, Simone Polanen, and Dee Spencer Bush.  The production is directed by Victoria Duncker.

Performances take place Friday, March 14 at 8:00pm; Saturday, March 15 at 8:00pm; Sunday, March 16 at 2:00pm; Friday, March 21 at 8:00pm; and Sunday, March 22 at 8:00pm.  Tickets are available for purchase online.  The Burgdorff Center is located at 10 Durand Road in Maplewood, New Jersey.

Alongside the production, The Newark Museum of Art will present a curated display of artwork which can be viewed before and after each performance.

The Maplewood Strollers is a community theater troupe in Maplewood, New Jersey. They have been in continuous operation since 1932. Each year they produce a season of two plays and a musical, as well as a children's theater production in midwinter. They welcome anyone with an interest in the arts and a willingness to work toward a common goal, whether onstage or behind the scenes. Their diverse membership includes people of all ages and from all walks of life. Whether you have always been a theater person or just enjoy the fun of working on a creative project, The Maplewood Strollers welcomes you.

Their quarterly meetings offer the opportunity to present a workshop, providing first-time playwrights and directors a forum for showcasing and experimenting with new works and ideas. Workshops also allow actors to perform in a somewhat more casual and less time-consuming venue than a full play may demand.
