West Windsor Arts presents Free Concert on Saturday featuring Dan Kassel and Dukes of Destiny

originally published: 08/08/2024

(WEST WINDSOR, NJ) -- West Windsor Arts presents a free concert at the Nassau Park Pavilion on Saturday, August 10, 2024 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.  Dan Kassel with a special guest will open the night followed by the headliner:  Dukes of Destiny.

5:00pm - Dan Kassel and special guest. First, you are in for a treat as Dan Kassel performs with a special guest, TBA. Dan is a versatile cellist who performs in a variety of ensembles ranging from classical to electronica, jazz and rock. As a solo artist, Dan has made a name for himself with his innovative approach to live-looping technology. By tapping, plucking and bowing on his instrument and recording each layer to play back in real time, he’s built a career as a one-man-band who provides soulful, original music for weddings, fine restaurants, private parties, corporate events and more.

6:00pm – Dukes of Destiny. Then, their headliner, Dukes of Destiny, will perform the blues. In 1985, five young, local musicians got together and began playing old blues songs in a rambling three-story house in Philadelphia. A couple of other people joined in, and they decided to take the act on the road as The Dukes of Destiny, a name they got from a matchbook cover urging the reader to “Be the Captain of Your Own Destiny.”

There have been changes over the years, but today they are led by dynamic harmonica player and singer John Colgan-Davis with Adam Darer on keys, Richard Ray Adler on guitar and vocals, Mike Blair on bass, and Mike O’Rourke on drums. The Dukes continue to present an exciting mix of powerful original songs and unique arrangements of blues and soul standards. They remain Philadelphia’s longest lived and best loved blues band.

Art Projects - Join West Windsor Arts' creative crew for hands-on art activities! They will offer two different projects geared for all ages and abilities.

Located behind Panera, off Rt. 1, at 510 Nassau Park Blvd, this hidden plaza is accessible, although located a distance on flat ground from the parking lot. It is a great location for a summer concert with plenty of parking, food options, and beautiful landscaped gardens.

West Windsor Arts cultivates the artist within us all, while inspiring a creative community that is engaged, inclusive and equitable.

It all began in 2002 when these community members and West Windsor Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh convened the Mayor’s Art Center Formation Task Force with the goal to reinvigorate the historic Princeton Junction Firehouse into an arts center. They sought to create a welcoming place that would encourage and nurture individuals on their personal creative journeys and provide top-notch arts and culture programming. Soon after, they applied for and received 501(c)3 nonprofit status from the IRS.

In September 2010, after years of planning and fundraising by the community, the art center opened in the historic 1931 firehouse under a ten-year lease from the township. The firehouse had once been the site of dances, receptions, and bandage-rolling events during World War II. Now, the organization and center once again serve as a gathering point for the greater West Windsor community presenting arts education classes and camps, community outreach events and rental space, select performances in theater, music, and dance, literary events, and art exhibitions.
