South Camden Theatre Company presents "The Toxic Avenger - The Musical"

originally published: 08/02/2024

(CAMDEN, NJ) -- South Camden Theatre Company presents The Toxic Avenger - The Musical weekends from September 13-29, 2024. This is charming love story and laugh-out-loud musical, based on the classic cult film, has it all: an unlikely hero, his beautiful girlfriend, a corrupt New Jersey Mayor and two guys who play… well, everyone else... bullies, mobsters, old ladies and stiletto-wearing back-up singers, plus so much more.

The Toxic Avenger comes from New Jersey natives Joe DiPietro (book and lyrics) and David Bryan (music and lyrics). The show features the most memorable and unbelievable duet you’ll ever see on any stage along with its fresh, fun and rockin’ score. This production is being directed by Joel Guerrero who directed the company's highly acclaimed production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time last season.

The Toxic Avenger will leave you laughing in the aisles. It features so many great songs and an amazing fresh score that everyone is sure to enjoy. This “toxic” love story also has an environmental twist! You’ll leave the theatre humming the songs and adding your voice to the fight against global warming. DC ARTS wrote, “The Toxic Avenger is a gloriously schticky, tongue-in-cheek musical in no danger of taking itself too seriously and reveling in the bawdy camp of its source material.”

South Camden Theatre Company Artistic Director, Dawn Varava, spoke at length about her desire to bring a fun, current show that isn’t often produced, to our stage. “This production of The Toxic Avenger brings a challenge to us as a theatre company that, I believe, we are ready to meet. We’ve produced classic plays, new plays, dramas, and comedies with great success, but never a musical. This will add a whole new dimension to our ongoing stellar work. The upcoming production hits every aspect of truly great theatre; there are props, costumes galore, an amazing set and, of course, a fantastic ensemble of great singers and actors delivering some of the most fun, comedic moments and songs I’ve ever seen on stage.”

The Toxic Avenger - The Musical opens September 13 and runs Friday, and Saturday evenings at 8:00pm and on Sunday afternoons at 2:00pm through September 29. Performances take place in The Waterfront South Theatre. Tickets are available for purchase online. General admission tickets are just $25. The theatre also offers Camden Residents the opportunity to purchase discounted tickets for just $5, thanks to a grant provided by The Holman Enterprise group. Wine and beer will be for sale on opening and closing nights.

South Camden Theatre Company's last production for their 2024 season is the brutally entertaining God of Carnage, a comedy of manners — without the manners. This show delves into human conflict and critically examines our human nature. This production is being directed by South Camden Theatre Company’s favorite female director, Ms. Connie Norwood. She is already turning this production on its head by selecting a very different cast. Ms. Norwood has directed shows including Suddenly Last Summer during season 7, King Hedley ll in season 10, By The Water in season 13, and most recently, Alabama Story in season 18. God of Carnage opens November 8 and runs through November 24.

Theatre has always been a vehicle for exploring important, sometimes uncomfortable themes, and our 2024 Season is doing so in many ways. Be sure to join them for these two remaining productions along with their New Play Reading series which returns on August 19th with a reading of Donna Kaz’s, The DocentA lecture by an expert on urban forestry becomes a metaphor for her early career, her youthful adjustment to life in New York, and her relationships with the evolving gay culture of the 1980s. This new play reading series is free to attend. The series is designed to help playwrights bring their work to the stage.

The Waterfront South Theatre, home to South Camden Theatre Company, is a true gem in Camden’s Waterfront South Arts District. It is the first free-standing theatre built in Camden in over 100 years. The Domenica Auditorium seats 96 guests per performance.

South Camden Theatre’s Waterfront South Theatre is just one block west of the intersection of Broadway and Ferry Avenue on Jasper Street/Michael Doyle Lane in the Waterfront South historic district of Camden. Our location is convenient to Collingswood, Haddon Township, Haddonfield, Haddon Heights, Oaklyn, Barrington, and many other South Jersey towns. In fact, it is less than 15 minutes from the center of Collingswood and most of Philadelphia.

South Camden Theatre Company is proud to call Camden home. When the company was founded in 2005, performances were held in the basement theatre of the Sacred Heart Church. We’re now the proud owners of The Waterfront South Theatre, the first free-standing theatre built for live theatre in Camden in more than 100 years.

The Waterfront South neighborhood is home to a growing arts community. Our arts neighbors now include Camden FireWorks, artist studios and gallery, The Nick Virgilio Writer’s House, Mighty Writers, Bee Still Studios, The Camden Shipyard & Maritime Museum, Camden Boat Works, and the Center For Environmental Transformation, along with The Heart of Camden, and The Sacred Heart Church.

Shows are sponsored in part by Holman Enterprise Group, Camden County Cultural & Heritage Commission at Camden County College, and Subaru of America along with many individual donations.
