The ShowRoom Unveils ROCK CINEMA Film Series This August

originally published: 07/22/2024

(ASBURY PARK, NJ) -- The ShowRoom has announced its latest film series, ROCK CINEMA, a celebration of rock & roll on film. Set against the perfect backdrop of Asbury Park and its rich rock & roll history, screenings will take place every Thursday in August at 7:30pm. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased on The ShowRoom's website, showroomcinemas.com, or in person at the box office.

The series includes screenings of Velvet Goldmine, Rock 'N' Roll High School, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Cry-Baby, and The Phantom of The Paradise.

August 1st: Velvet Goldmine (1998, dir. Todd Haynes) – Based loosely on David Bowie's constant reinvention, and starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Ewan McGregor and Christian Bale, this highly stylized film delves into the glam rock era of the 1970s through the rise and fall of a fictional rock star.

August 8th: Rock 'N' Roll High School (1979, dir. Allan Arkush) – Pitting cult icons PJ Soles & Mary Woronov against each other, this musical comedy follows a rebellious student who teams up with the Ramones to overthrow her high school's tyrannical new principal.

August 15th: Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001, dir. John Cameron Mitchell) - Adapted from the stage production of the same name, this cult classic tells the story of a transgender punk rock singer from East Berlin on a quest for stardom and love.

August 22nd: Cry-Baby (1990, dir. John Waters) – This musical comedy stars Johnny Depp as a 1950s teen rebel who falls for a girl from the right side of the tracks. Chock-full of fun cameos such as Iggy Pop, Troy Donahue, Mink Stole, and Patty Hearst, this rockabilly romp is a wild ride.

August 29th: The Phantom of The Paradise (1974, dir. Brian De Palma) – Celebrating its 50th anniversary, this musical horror film offers a rock adaptation of "The Phantom of the Opera" infused with just the right amount of campiness and biting commentary on the music industry.

Immerse yourself in the electrifying atmosphere of Asbury Park while enjoying these films that perfectly capture the essence of rock & roll. Mark your calendars for an unforgettable cinematic experience this August.

The ShowRoom, Asbury Park’s home to movies and more, is located at 707 Cookman Avenue in Asbury Park, New Jersey.
