Ocean County Library Toms River Branch presents Gallery Exhibit "Out of the Snow" by Katy Tanis

(TOMS RIVER, NJ) -- Looking for a break from the winter chill? "Out of the Snow," an exhibit of art by local author-illustrator-explorer Katy Tanis, is on display at the Ocean County Library Toms River Branch through January 31, 2024. The exhibit, in the Second Floor Gallery, features cold-weather animals in unexpected environs: Penguins in New Zealand's forests, polar bears frolicking in fireweed blooms, and even our local foxes in sandy dunes.

Watercolor, gouache, acrylics, and digital images on paper and wood most often are Katy’s media of choice. Her work is inspired by specific ecosystems and the wonderful webs of life that they contain. 

Katy contends that a work of art can offer a glimpse into the darkest jungle or deepest ocean and let a child explore wild new terrain in the comfort and safety of their own home. 

“My work not only aims to share that spark of wonderment but also to ignite a passion for conservation of endangered species and ecosystems,” she said, adding that she employs bold designs and color saturation to increase the appeal of the creatures she depicts.

“I hope those who view my work will share my reverence for the biodiversity of Earth,” she added.

The Jersey Shore resident is the creator of the children’s book, Love in the Wild, available at the Ocean County Library. A member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, she holds degrees in Biology, Computer Science and Art.

(DEAL PARK, NJ) -- The Gallery on Grant will host an opening reception for its new art show, "Enduring Spirit," on Sunday, July 12, 2026 from 6:15pm-7:30pm in the gallery, which is located inside the Axelrod Performing Arts Center.
