"#Resiliart Angola" Art Exhibit on Display in Newark's City Hall

originally published: 09/28/2023

(NEWARK, NJ) -- The City of Newark hosts the “#Resiliart Angola” Art Exhibit from September 29 until January 12, 2024The exhibit, curated by Newark artist Andrece Brady, celebrates the culture, art and art makers of Angola, and highlights artwork from previous residencies hosted by The American Schools of Angola in partnership with UNESCO. The works are installed throughout the Basement Level and the Third Floor hallways of City Hall.

An international exchange of art and culture hosted by the City of Newark’s Department of Art and Cultural Affairs in partnership with UNESCO’s and American Schools of Angola ResiliArt movement, the installation features 44 works of art created through the collaboration of Newarkers and Angolan artists during an exchange program in September.

“Walking the halls of City Hall today, we witness a wordless exchange between the people of Angola and our residents here in Newark,” said Mayor Baraka. “As always, once again, art transcends language to establish solidarity among people united by little more than their common humanity. It is a gift to be able to collaborate through art to achieve the highest exchange of shared hopes and dreams for the human family, and we are grateful to UNESCO for this meaningful opportunity.”

The ongoing residency program empowers Angolan artists and amplifies the vast range of Angolan art and culture. The work presented in “#Resiliart Angola” reveals layered conversations about African culture, pan-African peace, and human rights. Escaping the conventions of frames, and breaking the confines of two-dimensional mediums, the installation bursts with recycled plastics, textiles and found objects, and spills with tangles of thread, giving testament to a spirited artists’ community compelled to create vibrant art by any means necessary to express the history and heart of Angola.

The City of Newark will host the “#Resiliart Angola” Art Exhibit Opening on Friday, September 29, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at Newark’s City Hall Rotunda, located at 920 Broad Street.
