"All My Love For You," one thing different about this album is that you've got different directions in this album; it's one good thing about this album. I've got three or four hats that I wear in this album. I've been wearing these kind of hats all of my life; you hear the blues in me, the gospel in me, you hear the fun in me, the comedy in me and you have the entertainer in me and not just a singer, not just a harp player; you have all of these elements that are in Bobby Rush. The first song says, "We come a long way but we've got a long way to go. The things I used to do in Louisiana I don't do anymore. I used to carry water fifteen miles for fifty cents a day, it's a shame a boy nine years old had to work so hard everyday. I used to pick cotton in the cotton field where I used to live, now I'm still pickin' cotton but I want a piece of the field. So, take a look at me, you can see I'm free. I've got the shackles off my feet and the chains off my mind." That means, this is a new day, I don't have a beef with anyone about how I've been treated or the position I'm in because most of the positions I'm in are because I didn't know how to keep myself out of the positions I got in. I'm not talking that I endorse everything that has ever happened to me right or wrong; the ups and downs but the thing about it is, if you get yourself up from the fall and dust yourself off and keep going; if I can make it, you can too. Just get up, that's life, don't fall down and stay there and wallow, get off your knees and do something."
"You're Gonna Need A Man Like Me" is one of three new singles we've released from the album," he continued. "I'm talking about a woman who wants to put me down for a useful man; I'm not gonna call him a younger man but a useful man but she's gonna need an old man like me, you just watch and see (laughs). One of these days, you're gonna find out baby, what you had, you needed all of the time; it's right there up under your nose. Part of this was written from experience and part was what I wish and hope for (laughs). Experience, life, you're gonna need a good man like me; everybody needs a man but a good man is hard to come by. I say that in a joking fashion but a woman can need a good man like me but a man can need a good woman in the same way."
Sage advice from someone who has had his share of the aforementioned "Ups and downs" and who has persevered for more decades than many have lived but he realizes that in order to maintain longevity, one must adapt and perhaps change with the times. A large portion of blues music revolves around lyrical content and with songs such as the tongue in cheek "TV Mama," which speaks of a certain woman's, umm, shall we say girth? Bobby maintains and shows us his sense of humor and his way of looking at lyrical content is pure gold.
"You've got to modify your lyrics and talk about the things that people relate to the most today. You have to think about what people wear, where they go to school, what they think and what they've been taught, who they've been taught by and what are their surroundings. You've got to write about their surroundings; today's surroundings. People talk about different things in a different way but it's all the same thing. When you go to the grocery store; what do you do? You buy eggs, milk, chicken, hog, pig, cow and you fix it a different way but it's all the same thing. You fix your rice 20 different ways, your steak 20 different ways but it's all the same. I remember going to the bathroom when I was a kid and as a poor family, we didn't have electric lights and we had to go outside to the toilet, it looked bad, it smelled bad. Now I've got nine bathrooms in my house that look good and they smell good but you do the same thing in them; that hasn't changed (laughs). When I write my lyrics, I talk about the same thing that my grandfather and the old people talked about; there's nothing new in the song but now you talk about the same thing but with a different approach, it's the same thing. When your grand-daddy was going with your grandmother, they did the same thing we did when we were first married or with our girlfriend or whatever. Now, your children do the same thing with a different approach; it ain't no different than loving and making love (laughs)."
Safe to say, the list of 89 year old musicians making records is not a very long one. Now that it is out, what are his plans to support the record, did he use certain musicians in the studio and will he be using them if and when he performs?
"There's no band involved with me personally, I had different musicians on the sessions and they did the songs with my direction. I've mapped this out myself the way I wanted to go. I had a hip-hop player from Jackson, Mississippi who was also the engineer on the record and he was a great help to me, he had the respect for me where he said, "OK, do what you're gonna do" and his name was Dexter Allen and the only input that he had was not giving me any input. So, by him not having any input, that meant that I had to come up with all of the inputs (laughs) and so far so good but at least he respects me enough that if there was something that wasn't right he would've said something."
"I'm going to tour and support it and I'm working on some things that I can't talk about too much. I'm hoping to do some things with Kenny Wayne Shepherd, there are a few other people who I can't name right now and we're talking about negotiating some things and they like what I'm doing and what I'm bringing to the table but at least I'm coming to the table even if some kissing butt is on my turn (laughs). I'm laughing about that but there's so much truth in that. You've got to be careful about who you meet, how you treat them and who you walk by because the same people you meet on the way up, you meet on their way back down."
