(GLASSBORO, NJ) -- Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum has announced its upcoming season full of new exhibitions and artistic programs running from September 2023 through May 2024. The exhibition season kicks off with The Lightness of Bearing, a selection of works by Virginia Maksymowicz. On view from September 5 - October 28, 2023, Maksymowicz’s works consider the symbolic resilience and strength of the female figure in art and architecture. The exhibition includes two new works created in recognition of the University's Centennial, representing the historical spaces the university occupies.
Opening on November 6, Layers of Authenticity features five artists utilizing unique production processes to reveal authentic and insightful statements about our current political and social landscape. The exhibition will showcase multimedia works by Maria Dumlao, Gabriel Martinez, Paul Anthony Smith, Eric Toscano, and Steven Earl Weber, and will be on view through December 20, 2023.
In the New Year, Ellen Harvey brings her traveling project The Disappointed Tourist to Rowan University. The exhibition is an ongoing project by Ellen Harvey that includes paintings of lost sites suggested by members of the public. The Disappointed Tourist has been traveling and growing since 2020 with 260 sites painted to date. On view from January 16 - March 9, 2024, the exhibition will feature submissions from the local Glassboro, NJ community as a part of the evolving project.
On March 25, NJ-based maker Jack Larimore’s solo exhibition Bonding brings together work as a tribute to multidimensional stories of bonding—from the intimate and familial of making babies, making dinner, making a home, to the more universal—making music and stories. Drawn to the positive bonds that coexist with the challenges we experience in the natural world, Larimore explores these bonds surfacing through making. Bonding will be on view through May 18, 2024.
Additionally, The Center for Art & Social Engagement—the gallery’s satellite location—will host two exhibitions this season. On view from October 5 - December 8, 2023, Cynthia Mailman investigates ancient representations of female deities in her solo exhibition Origins of God. The exhibition commemorates the 45th anniversary of The Sister Chapel, a historic collaborative feminist installation on permanent display at the Center.
Opening in February in partnership with (re)FOCUS, who is mounting the 50th-anniversary celebration of Philadelphia Focuses on Women in the Visual Arts, 10 of 80 + 1 will feature ten artists from the Rowan University Art Gallery and Museum’s permanent collection who were in the original 1974 exhibition. The exhibition complements Rowan’s permanent display of The Sister Chapel, created in 1978 as one of the earliest feminist collaborative installations. The exhibition will be on view from February 5 - April 25, 2024.

Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum is located at 301 High St W in Glassboro, New Jersey. It serves as a vibrant cultural destination for South Jersey, the Rowan community, and the surrounding region. Our mission is to provide a platform for discourse on best practices in contemporary art by professional artists, curators, and scholars through the presentation of interdisciplinary art exhibitions, panel discussions, guest curatorial projects, and other public programming. Gallery Hours are Monday - Friday from 10:00am - 5:00pm and Saturday from 11:00am - 5:00pm.
The Center for Art & Social Engagement (237 Mullica Hill Road, Glassboro, NJ) is a program of Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum at Westby Hall. It serves as a venue for investigating social issues through arts-based methods. Anchored by a permanent display of The Sister Chapel, a historic collaborative feminist installation, the Center draws inspiration from the cooperative spirit of the women’s art movement. Programming at the Center encourages interdisciplinary collaborations that explore diverse and timely social issues through multidisciplinary practices, broadly conceived to include a variety of mediums such as photojournalism, film and video, historical ephemera, faculty and student research presentations, info-graphic presentations, STEM/STEAM installations, and public programming. Gallery Hours are Tuesday - Thursday from 11:00am - 4:00pm.
