Basie Center Cinemas Unveils "Film Club" Slate; Holiday Break Titles To Feature Cult Classics

originally published: 12/24/2022

(RED BANK, NJ) -- Basie Center Cinemas, the independent movie house located on White Street in downtown Red Bank, has announced a slate of cult classic films to kick off its new Basie Center Cinemas ‘Film Club’ series.

The Boxer, Million Dollar Baby, Run Lola Run, The Breakfast Club, Taxi Driver, The Big Lebowski, Paris Texas, Forrest Gump and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off will return to the silver screen the week following Christmas, while five of Quentin Tarantino’s biggest titles – Reservoir Dogs, Django Unchained, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, Inglorious Basterds and Pulp Fiction – will be featured the week of January 2. A full schedule is listed below.

Basie Center Cinemas’ Film Club initiative will return classic motion pictures to their rightful place – on a big screen inside a traditional movie theatre. Upcoming Film Club programming will highlight Oscar-nominated actors, films and directors, plus specific genres and subject matter. The series will be curated by local film school students and cinema personnel, with tickets to each film priced at just $5.  Bundle packages, which will allow entry into any or all of each week’s curated titles, will be priced at $20.

“The building at 36 White Street, which we’ve operated as Basie Center Cinemas for nearly two years, has a fifty year history of bringing film to our community” says Izzy Sackowitz, Chief Operating Officer, Count Basie Center for the Arts. “With our team of film students and other curators, we feel there’s something missing out there for fans of the classic cinema experience. The Basie Center Cinemas Film Club will fill that void.”

New York University student and 2022 Trinity Hall graduate Amanda Paige Philipson, (18) and Tyler Izzo, 17, Rumson, who will enter NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts’ film program in September 2023, are two of the curators involved in the Film Club initiative.

“With spots like The Inkwell and other longtime hangouts drying up, we’re looking to create a scenario at Basie Center Cinemas where people our age can see each other, watch films and talk about their cultural significance,” said Philipson.

“This area has a rich history of artists and auteurs, for whom film is a personal passion,” Izzo added. “For them, and for people whose passion for film needs to be filled by something more than a non-communal, living room experience, we’re creating a comfortable and affordable space.”

Tickets for all Basie Center Cinemas films, including Film Club titles, can be purchased at the box office (36 White Street, Red Bank) or online at www.basiecentercinemas.org.
