(NEWARK, NJ) -- Red Hot Chili Peppers will receive the prestigious Global Icon Award and perform live at the 2022 “VMAs,” airing Sunday, August 28 at 8:00pm from the Prudential Center in Newark. The 8x “VMAs” winners to make their highly-anticipated return to the iconic MTV stage for the first time in over two decades, last performing in 2000 when they received the coveted Video Vanguard Award.
Originally hailing from MTV’s Europe Music Awards (“EMAs”), the uber prestigious Global Icon Award celebrates an artist or band whose unparalleled career and continued impact and influence has maintained a unique level of global success in music and beyond, leaving an indelible mark on the music landscape.
This year, the Red Hot Chili Peppers scored its 29th nomination - and first since 2006 - looking to take home a win in “Best Rock” for “Black Summer,” the lead single off their platinum-selling chart-topping twelfth studio album, Unlimited Love.
Red Hot Chili Peppers will add the title of ‘Global Icon’ during an already landmark year for the band that includes two new studio albums, including just-announced Return of the Dream Canteen, releasing October 14th on Warner Records, and a critically and commercially-acclaimed global stadium tour.
One of the most successful acts in rock history, singer Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea, drummer Chad Smith, and guitarist John Frusciante, have sold more than 60 million albums, including five multi-platinum LPs, won six Grammy Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.

A trio of legendary “VMAs” performances, including their 1992 debut with a head-banging rendition of “Give it Away,” a rocking performance of “Warped” in 1995 and their last show appearance in 2000, performing hit “Californication” before accepting the coveted Video Vanguard Award.
The band were 3x nominees in their first year (1990) for “Higher Ground,” with nods for “Breakthrough Video,” “Best Post-Modern Video” & “Best Group Video.”
8x “VMAs” wins, including: 3x winners in 1992 for “Best Art Direction in a Video,” “Breakthrough Video” (both for “Give it Away”) and “Viewer’s Choice” (“Under the Bridge”). In 1999, a win for “Best Artist Website.” Three additional wins in 2000 with “Best Art Direction in a Video” and “Best Direction in a Video,” for “Californication,” plus the Video Vanguard Award.
MTV and Red Hot Chili Peppers also teamed up for an exclusive global video premiere of “Tippa My Tongue,” the lead single off Return of the Dream Canteen.
The band's last Moon Person was in 2006 was for “Dani California,” winning in “Best Art Direction in a Video.”
