In 2013, to document the “Maidan Revolution,” Ukraine’s peaceful protests against Russian interference in their politics, director Lesya Kalynska began documenting the struggle. The following year, as Russia invaded Crimea and Donbas, Ms. Kalynska kept her cameras rolling, capturing much of the lead-up to the full-fledged invasion and catastrophic war they face today.
Following the lives of an idealistic young couple caught up in the conflict, A Rising Fury is an intimate, cinema vérité portrait of the lovers’ perseverance and courage. Filmed over 8 years, with harrowing footage from war-torn frontlines, A Rising Fury honors their sacrifice in defense of the land they love, its democracy, and the survival of their relationship. Director Lesya Kalynska is a New York City-based independent film and documentary film director, screenwriter, and producer. Originally from Kyiv, Ukraine, Kalynska earned her MFA in directing and writing from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and is a PhD in Slavic Literatures and Languages in Ukraine. Among her many awards, Ms. Kalynska is a recipient of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Production Award (Golden Globes) for her feature length documentary in progress, “In the Land of the Lost Crusaders.” Producer TJ Collins is an award-winning filmmaker having produced more than a dozen independent films. His feature film debut, Willets Point, received the Audience Award at the Long Island International Film Expo. Since 2016, Mr. Collins has served as producer and co-writer of A Rising Fury. A Rising Fury is supported by prominent film organizations such as the Sundance Film Institute (USA), IDFA Bertha Fund (Netherlands), BritDoc Documentary Journalism Fund (UK) and many others. Its world premiere took place at the Tribeca Film Festival in June of 2022. Lighthouse International Film Society would like to thank their sponsors Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences and Ocean County Cultural and Heritage Commission.
