
(MONROE TOWNSHIP, NJ) -- The Monroe Cultural Arts Commission has announced the return of the Mighty Oak Players after a two-year hiatus due to Covid. They are returning to the stage under the direction of Jennifer Alagna who previously directed several shows for the company and will present Once Upon A Mattress from July 21-24 at Monroe High School Performing Arts Center. Once Upon A Mattress is a musical comedy with music by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer, and book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer.
This show opened off-Broadway in May 1959 and moved quickly to Broadway with critical acclaim. In 1960 Carol Burnett was nominated and won a Tony for best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical.
Auditions for Once Upon A Mattress were conducted at Monroe Township High School April 19-21. An extraordinary cast, following in the footsteps of Carol Burnett, was chosen to act and perform the many musical numbers in the show.
