(HACKENSACK, NJ) -- Hackensack High School's Drama Club will stage its spring musical, Sweet Charity, from March 18-20 at the Hackensack Performing Arts Center (HACPAC). The musical features music by Cy Coleman, book by Neil Simon, and lyrics by Dorothy Fields. It follows the romantic trials and tribulations of Charity Hope Valentine, "a girl who wanted to be loved."
Charity is a taxi dancer, a dance partner-for-hire at a seedy dance hall in New York City. Though the job is undesirable, Charity's hopeful romanticism and unfailing optimism lift her out of her circumstances and help her reach for a life beyond. In the past, she's been strung along and hung out to dry by a series of bad relationships and lousier men, but when she meets the neurotic and shy Oscar, will she finally find true love at last?
The production is directed by Caseen Gaines with choreography by Michele Stein and musical direction by Julie Platte. This is their first musical since 2019.
Performances are Friday, March 18 at 7:00pm; Saturday, March 19 at 7:00pm; and Sunday, March 20 at 2:00pm. Tickets are $15 and available for purchase online.
The Hackensack Performing Arts Center is located at 102 State Street in Hackensack, New Jersey.
