Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...2/17/22

“I’ve played in Morristown a lot and in Red Bank too; like everybody else, I’m trying to regroup and figure out how to do this thing again,” said a laughing Marcia Ball as she discussed her upcoming show at the South Orange Performing Arts Center on February 19 and her latest release, “Shine Bright.” People would say, “I haven’t seen you in so long” and then I’d kind of catch myself  and say, well hey, I haven’t seen anybody!”

Our Favorite Stories In Comedy: So You Want To Be A Comedian?

New Jersey Stage published its 25,000th story in December 2021. As the site approached the milestone, we posed the question on social media as how we should celebrate.  One response was to highlight our favorite stories from over the years.  We liked this idea, but could not narrow things down to just 25 favorites so we will present a favorite each day from different genres. Since the So You Want To Be A Comedian? series was just restarted up in Red Bank, we thought it would be good to spotlight our original feature on the series.

film

Moving Feature Film Not Today plays at the Spring 2022 New Jersey Film Festival on February 18

Not Today, written and directed by Aditya Kripalani, follows the emotional story of a girl’s first day working as a suicide prevention counsellor trying to keep a man from jumping off a building. In English and Hindi, with subtitles, the two main characters are compelling to watch as they converse only over the phone. Aliah Rupawala, played by Rucha Inamdar, and Ashwin Mathur, played by Harsh Chhaya, find they may have more in common with each other than they initially thought, and they may be able to help each other work through their own feelings. Always unsure if anyone is going to pick up the phone call, this film grips an audience with suspense and our connection with the characters.

NJCU Gallery presents "Thank God, I'm Home: First Meal" by Julie Green

(JERSEY CITY, NJ) -- New Jersey City University presents "Thank God, I'm Home: First Meal" by Julie Green from now through March 25, 2022 in the Harold B. Lemmerman Gallery.  For the past three years until her recent death, Julie Green (1961– 2021) had been asking wrongfully convicted persons about their “first meals” upon their release from prison, painting their responses for her series by the same name. With colorfully painted details of food, such as oranges, burgers and fries, and pizza, 12 works from the series featured in this exhibition humanize and personalize the shocking statics around wrongful convictions in the U.S.
