Foggy Otis plays the uke but that wasn’t always the case. After a life-threatening illness took away his ability to fret a guitar, Foggy never expected to play music again. An artery was harvested from his left wrist during emergency heart surgery, resulting in a crippling numbness from wrist to thumb. An avid guitarist since childhood, this left a void in Foggy’s life.
Enter the ukulele, a tiny guitar-like instrument that originated in Portugal but is most often associated with Hawaii. The small size and wider string spacing helped Foggy keep the numbness at bay but more importantly, the uke enabled him to create music again.
Foggy embraced all things uke, practicing as much as his physical condition would allow. Over a few years utilizing various coping strategies, Foggy built up his endurance and repertoire to the point where he can now perform for three hours plus. He became a fixture on the Hudson Valley music scene in Upstate New York where he also taught ukulele at Columbia-Greene Community College.
Now over a decade into his ukulele journey, Foggy has settled down in Orange, CT where he recorded his new single, “Waiting To Feel The Sun” in his home-studio. All of the sounds heard on the song were performed on ukuleles, from the U-Bass to the “electric piano” and “Mellotron” ukes. Foggy co-produced the song with music industry veteran Tom Gioia.
Tom mixed and mastered the song at his facility in River Edge, New Jersey, Visionary Music Group. VMG’s clients include Panic At The Disco, The Rolling Stones, My Morning Jacket, Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga, Paul Simon, among others.
