Guitarist Julian Lage, a seven-time GRAMMY nominee, brings his new quartet to McCarter in support of Scenes from Above, his fifth Blue Note album and second with producer Joe Henry. The New Yorker placed Lage in the “highest category of improvising musicians.” Drawing on jazz, folk, classical and Americana, he creates music that is both grounded and full of surprises.
Lage is joined by longtime collaborators John Medeski on keyboards, Jorge Roeder on bass and Kenny Wollesen on drums.
About the musicians
Julian Lage, guitar. A child prodigy, Lage played with Carlos Santana at age eight and was the subject of the Oscar-nominated documentary Jules at Eight. He has since collaborated with artists including John Zorn, Gary Burton, Fred Hersch and Bob Dylan, while developing his own distinctive approach to jazz and American music.
John Medeski, keyboards. A founding member of Medeski Martin & Wood, Medeski has appeared on more than 300 recordings. Equally at home on piano, Hammond organ and vintage keyboards, he has worked with artists including John Zorn, John Scofield, Phil Lesh, Marc Ribot, Sean Lennon and the Blind Boys of Alabama.
Jorge Roeder, bass. Born in Lima, Peru, Roeder is known for his versatility and expressive playing, drawing on classical training and a wide range of musical influences. He is a longtime Lage collaborator and a member of pianist Shai Maestro’s trio.
Kenny Wollesen, drums and percussion. A founding member of the New Klezmer Trio and a member of Sex Mob, Wollesen has recorded and toured with artists including Tom Waits, Bill Frisell, Norah Jones, Sean Lennon and John Zorn.

Based on the iconic film starring Dustin Hoffman, Tootsie is a laugh-out-loud musical comedy with heart. Following a struggling actor who lands an unlikely role by adopting an onstage alter ego, this Broadway hit is a joyful celebration of ambition, reinvention, and unexpected love.

Take in the joy, hope and inspiration of the music of America’s most beloved singer songwriter as Jim Curry performs John Denver’s greatest hits such as “Rocky Mountain High,” “Annie’s Song” and “Country Roads.”
