Stage combat is a vital theatrical element that brings physical storytelling to life. By blending choreography with emotion, we are able to create the illusion of violence while keeping performers safe. In Romeo and Juliet, stage combat plays a pivotal part in the show—most notably with the duels between Mercutio and Tybalt, and later Tybalt and Romeo. These scenes are not just action-packed moments; they are critical turning points that heighten tension, and ultimately lead to the tragic consequences of the feud between the Montagues and Capulets. These moments are done most successfully when stage combat is done with care and precision. Learn how actors prepare for combat onstage with Director of Production Steven Beckel.
