In 1978, a woman named Cheryl Bradshaw found herself in the role of the "bachelorette" on an episode of The Dating Game. Her job was to choose from one of three "bachelors", who were hidden behind a screen, by asking them a serious of questions and determining their suitability for a date by their answers. On shows like this, the guys do their best to provide witty answers and come off as charming, but the reality is that the woman is simply trying to determine which of them is the least creepy. After asking a series of questions, Cheryl decided that the least creepy bachelor was a 35-year-old named Rodney Alcala. Ironically, Rodney was a serial killer who had murdered at least five women at that point and would go on to claim more victims.

Based on Federico Fellini's semi-autobiographical film 8 1/2, this dazzling production of Nine – with a cast of 19 brilliant performers, and a 10-piece orchestra – tells the story of celebrated film director Guido Contini as he navigates a personal and professional crisis while balancing the many women in his life. Even those who don't know very much about visual art are familiar with the Cubist approach to the human body. Pablo Picasso liked to present a person from many angles at once, and compress three-dimensional form into a two-dimensional frame. No matter what step she's on, that nude descending a staircase comes at us all at once. We know we're looking at an individual person, even if it's never clear which of those fields of color represent the present moment and which are afterimages, projections, and vapor trails. Representing human beings like this guarantees that there’ll be distortions: facial features in strange places, unexpected angles, duplicates and odd subtractions, clashes between heads, necks, and torsos, the shuffling of expressions, and the surprise and disquiet that comes when an obviously human figure doesn't look much like a human at all.
