"Becomes a Woman" Brings a Hidden Gem to Life

In the circle of the arts, hearing the name Betty Smith usually brings the book A Tree Grows in Brooklyn to mind. This classic novel captures the life story of Francie Nolan's coming of age as a woman in working class Brooklyn in the early 1900's. However, Smith had another part of her writing life that is seldom mentioned. That part is her keen interest in play writing and the theater.

This year's Garden State Film Festival kicks off Thursday, March 23, and will be serving up a four-day weekend of more independent films and one-of-a-kind events than even the most die-hard moviegoer could take in.








Mayor Baraka Unveils Harriet Tubman Monument

(NEWARK, NJ) -- Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka was joined by First Lady Tammy Murphy, State Senate Majority Leader M. Teresa Ruiz, and numerous other dignitaries on March 9, 2023 to unveil a new monument honoring Harriet Tubman and pay homage to the city's role in the Underground Railroad along with the Black liberation movement's rich history in the area. The ceremony also observed Harriet Tubman Day, which is March 10th. The monument stands in Harriet Tubman Square, at the intersection of Washington and Broad Streets, in downtown Newark.



Performing Arts School at bergenPAC to Hold Auditions for "Evita"

(ENGLEWOOD, NJ) -- The Performing Arts School at bergenPAC (PAS) has announced auditions for Evita, as its renown summer musical program returns for its 10th production. The auditions will be held April 20-22, 2023.

RVCC Professor Receives Local Arts Grant for Concert Series

(BRANCHBURG, NJ) -- Dr. Anna Keiserman, a pianist and Assistant Professor of Music at Raritan Valley Community College in Branchburg, has received a New Jersey State Council on the Arts Local Arts Program Grant from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission for the MOZAIKA concert series.

PBS' Independent Lens Launches 20th Season of Free Pop-Up Screening Series in Teaneck and Nationwide

(TEANECK, NJ) -- The award-winning PBS documentary series, INDEPENDENT LENS, presents the launch of the upcoming season of Indie Lens Pop-Up in partnership with the Teaneck International Film Festival and the Puffin Cultural Forum. The season kicks-off on February 4, 2026 with The Librarians and continues through May. The series is free for all but sign up is required.

Coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Freedom at Home: Telling the Full Story of America's Founding Homes and Gardens examines four estates belonging to five signers of the Declaration: William Paca, Richard Henry Lee, Francis Lightfoot Lee, Thomas Jefferson, and Arthur Middleton.

Faith and Frosting Collide in "The Cake" at Bergen County Players

(ORADELL, NJ) -- Enjoy a touching and topical dramedy as love clashes with conscience in Bergen County Players' (BCP) production of The Cake. The play, written by Bekah Brunstetter, producer/writer for the hit TV series This Is Us, is directed by Carol Fisher of Teaneck. It opens March 14 and runs through April 11, 2026 at the Little Firehouse Theatre in Oradell.
