WSOU 89.5FM hosted Corey Taylor (Slipknot, Stone Sour, CMFT) in studio

(SOUTH ORANGE, NJ) -- Corey Taylor, lead singer and lyricist for Slipknot and Stone Sour recently paid a visit to Seton Hall's Pirate Radio, 89.5 FM WSOU. He is currently on the road supporting his latest album CMF2, which was released on September 15th.

On the air, Taylor talked to music director Patrick Ritter about his entire career, spanning multiple projects, albums, and groups. In between talking segments, WSOU played a selection of solo material, Slipknot, Stone Sour, and other music that has inspired Taylor. Speaking to the Slipknot album Vol. 3, the album that sprung them to mainstream rockstar status, "If we stayed just trying to out heavy ourselves, we were gonna turn into somebody who didn't sound honest," Taylor said. "We stopped and we said we need to spread our boundaries out and we need to take this risk." He added that "people don't realize...doing Vol. 3 was just as big a risk as making Iowa. So lyrically, sonically, creatively...even though we were pulling apart at the seams at the time...it's probably one of the best things I've ever done."

It was during this time that Taylor returned to his pre-Slipknot group, Stone Sour. "We demoed [Get Inside] in my grandma's house in my bedroom," Taylor told WSOU. "I remember screaming in the bathroom and she was going 'What's going on in there? Are you okay?,' and I was like 'I'm just doing takes!'"

Taylor's latest album CMF2 is a follow-up to his 2020 release CMFT. He made it clear that anyone looking for Slipknot or Stone Sour on CMFT was not going to find it, but on CMF2 there is something for every type of Corey Taylor fan. "I thought that the solo thing would more of the traditional singer songwriter thing, and the thing I realized is it doesn't have to be traditional," Taylor told WSOU. "When it came time to do CMF2, I leaned into the more extreme stuff...it all kind of fit together with some of the more melancholy, morose stuff...it just felt really really good."
