Woodbury to Hold Juneteenth Jubilee

originally published: 05/22/2023

Dr. Lourin Plant

(WOODBURY, NJ) -- On Friday, June 9, 2023, Woodbury Juneteenth and Music at Bunker Hill present a Juneteenth inspired program that will present how African/African American (AA) Spirituals have had an influence on music throughout the decades leading up to modern day music. Dr. Lourin Plant, Director of Collegium Music at Rowan University, will be directing and performing his original program with four of his colleagues. Attendees will learn to listen to their favorite genre of music and hear the influences of African/African American Spirituals. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of AA Spirituals and respect for this genre of music. They will show the continued relevance of the Spirituals with audience participation and a Q&A.

Music is a way to connect cultures. This program will show how African culture has endured and coped through the practice of maintaining Spirituals in high regard.

The program will be held for students at Woodbury Jr./Sr. High School in downtown Woodbury, New Jersey on June 9 at 9:00am.

“This program is made possible in part by funding from The Gloucester County Cultural & Heritage Commission at Rowan College at Gloucester County, a partner of The New Jersey Historical Commission, a division of the Department of the State,”  in cooperation with the City of Woodbury, New Jersey, Woodbury Juneteenth, Music at Bunker Hill and Woodbury Jr./Sr. High School.
