Vanguard Theater Company presents "Passing Strange"

originally published: 02/11/2023

(MONTCLAIR, NJ) -- Vanguard Theater Company presents Passing Strange from February 16-26, 2023. Passing Strange is a 2008 Tony Award-winning comedy-drama, autobiographical rock musical about a young African American's artistic journey of self-discovery, with strong elements of philosophical existentialism, metafiction, and the artistic journey. The musical's lyrics and book are by Stew with music and orchestrations by Heidi Rodewald and Stew.

"Call it a rock concert with a story to tell, trimmed with a lot of great jokes. Or call it a sprawling work of performance art, complete with angry rants and scary drag queens... I'll just call it wonderful, and a welcome anomaly on Broadway." -- The New York Times

Broadway veterans Dwayne Clark (Narrator) and Brandi Chavonne Massey (Mother) with Jason Tyler Smith (Youth) lead this all-star cast in Stew's semi autobiographical rock musical about finding yourself, love, and art. Amanda Rose Gross, Lawrence Dandridge, A'ja Desormeau, and J'royce Jata round out the cast.
