The Sourlands Then and Now: Ten Year Anniversary of the film "Sourlands"

originally published: 03/22/2022

(HOPEWELL, NJ) -- Northeast Organic Farming Association of New Jersey (NOFA-NJ) and Sourland Conservancy will present a screening the film Sourlands by Jared Flesher from Hundred Year Films on Thursday, March 31st.

2022 marks the 10-year anniversary of the film Sourlands. NOFA-NJ and Sourland Conservancy will gather the filmmaker, Jared Flesher, subjects from the film, and both organization's staff for a lively discussion surrounding current efforts to preserve the Sourlands, how farmers are adapting to climate and development pressures, and what has changed in the decade since the film was released.

The film screening will be held on Thursday, March 31st from 7:00pm to 9:00pm virtually. Visit www.sourland.org/events to register for the screening and discussion.

In the Sourlands of New Jersey, a rampaging deer herd, invasive plants, and wholesale habitat destruction threaten the local ecosystem. Farmers in the surrounding valley battle against high land prices, high property taxes, and increasingly erratic weather patterns. A group of local engineers searches for new ways to save energy and stop global warming. Pay close attention, and the challenges facing this community look a lot like the challenges facing ecosystems, farmers, and energy visionaries everywhere.

The message of cautious hope presented in the film is just as universal: To start solving complicated environmental problems, we need to forgo quick fixes and start restoring the natural  world — and people's connection to it -- from the forest floor up.
