The Newark Museum of Art presents Community Day: Journey to Freedom

(NEWARK, NJ) -- The Newark Museum of Art wants you to join in a celebration of the iconic Harriet Tubman with a day of music, dance, and activities inspired by her legacy and African traditions.  The event takes place on Saturday, November 12 from Noon - 5:00pm and is free to attend, but registration is required.

This event is part of a series of celebrations surrounding the unveiling of the Harriet Tubman monument in the Spring of 2023 at the recently renamed Harriet Tubman Square. Click here to learn more about the project.

PERFORMANCES: African dance workshop with Zawadi, Haitian dance performance with Jessica "Teallocks," Capoeira performance with Jana, theatrical performance by Antoinette Ellis, musical performance by Jamale, and Negus Ballerina Project with Courtney Key.

ACTIVITIES: Take a public tour about Abolitionism and the Civil War or enjoy some artmaking activities like making a lantern, Adinkra stamps or a self-portrait.

FOOD: Grab a bite to eat from Eclectic Catering!

PLANETARIUM: Stop by the Planetarium to see Skywatchers of Africa. The show highlights the diversity of African astronomy, examines cultural uses of the sky that developed throughout history, and celebrates our shared human experience.  

DOCUMENTARY: Head to the auditorium for a screening of Harriet Tubman, Visions of Freedom which sheds new light on the life for Tubman. 

The Newark Museum of Art is located at 49 Washington Street in Newark, New Jersey. It is the state’s largest museum and holds fine collections of American art, decorative arts, contemporary art, and arts of Asia, Africa, the Americas, and the ancient world.
